Those of you who have had an experience with learning a second or foreign language would know exactly what I am talking about. A poor lexicon or vocabulary base does affect the overall linguistic performance of a learner both in writing and reading. From my own experience as a language teacher I noticed that most of students have problems particularly with the active type of vocabulary. The active vocabulary is those words we AUTHENTICALLY use both in written and oral speech. When a learner first internalizes a vocabulary item it automatically becomes passive and is stored in their vocabulary repertoire but once they start using it in communication it shifts to the active side .
