The Super Long-Exposure In this article, I'm not letting the issue of sensor heat stop me from trying a really long exposure. The ProblemThe problem came when I tried to accurately predict the settings I needed for a super long-exposure. I really wanted a way to get this right on the first try. High ISO Test ShotYears ago, I learned about a neat concept from Harold Davis (now with Star Circle Academy) called the High ISO Test Shot.

Theory Behind What I'm Doing Approach #1: Counting Stops Count the number of f-stops you extend your exposure time and reduce your ISO by the same number of stops. How did I do that? So knowing how to take care of your gear is vitally important to maintain the health of your gear (and your pocket too). Canon Service and Support has released the following video on how to take care of your camera and lenses with recommendations on how to clean and store your camera. This 8 minute video might save you an expensive trip to the Canon repair center and possibly extend the life of your stuff. Zach Sutton’s informative article, 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Your Camera, on Tuts+ caught my eye last week. He brings up a few special functions available on most digital cameras these days that some of you might not know how to use. Here’s his list, with links to some of my favorite tutorials explaining how to make them happen: 1. Bracketing is a function I used to use in my old film days when I wasn’t quite sure which shutter speed to use for a proper exposure. 2.

I recently started using back button focus and, while it took a couple weeks to get used to, I’m now wondering how I ever got along without it! 3. 4. 5. I used to work with a cinematographer named Rob Draper (Halloween 5, The Spitfire Grill). He was having me practice one day by shooting a product shot for a whisky bottle.

I had set the bottle up in front of a seamless backdrop and put a light in front of the bottle at about a 45 degree angle. Rob came in to see how I was doing. His first comment was “What made you put the light in front of the bottle rather than behind the bottle?” Reverse Key Lighting is also called “short lighting” or “narrow lighting”. Reverse Key Lighting can be used in closeups And in wider shots Outdoors Indoors It can be used in animation In a two shot With a lot of fill light Or very little fill light One of the strengths of reverse key lighting is the way the shadows falloff across the face.

When you place the key light on the other side though, the light rakes across the face and you can see the light falling off into shadow on the side of the face closest to the camera. Top 20 Photography Websites 2012. Coming from a photography tutorial background myself, it’s no surprise that these websites mainly focus on learning, and reader evolvement. You can learn something new everyday with photography, and just when you think you know it all, something else comes along to challenge your abilities. That’s why I’ve compiled a list of what I believe to be the top 20 photography websites in the world.

I’m a self taught photographer, and when I first started, websites like these really helped me along, so I know what to look for in a great photography website. The order of these websites have nothing to do with who writes them, or how many people follow them; it’s all about the content they produce. This is a sequel to last year’s top 20. Without further ado, here they are… Top 20 1 - Fstoppers Number one. This isn’t a traditional tutorial website like many of the others on this list, but I find their content to be just as interesting. 2 - PopPhoto 4 - Strobist David Hobby is the man. 6 - PictureCorrect. The 8 Best Inexpensive Canon Lenses. In the last few years, I have reviewed more lenses than you could possibly imagine.

My photography students are always asking which lens is right for them, so I spend a significant amount of time looking for lenses that offer superior quality at lower price points. These are the best inexpensive Canon lenses I could find. There are many others that I’m sure people will mention in the comments, but only 6 could make the cut for this list.

These lenses are the ones that I recommend very often on the Improve Photography Lens Finder. If you haven’t tried my lens finder, you’re crazy!!! I spent thousands of dollars and over a year developing the lens finder. I must mention from the outset that I use “the triad” of lenses (explained later), so I’m comparing the lenses in this list against the highest quality lenses in the Canon system at any price. Also, I must issue a disclaimer that the word “inexpensive” means different things to different people. Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Lens Canon 100mm f/2. Introductions - Christine Wilson. Sometimes you just never know when you will find a persons work that really appeals to you. I have known Christine Wilson, or know of her work for a while, but recently when I started my Flickr account, she started following me.

As you do when someone follows you, especially if you know them, you go and take a look at their Flickr page, and as soon as I saw it, I thought, I must see if Christine will give me permission to feature her work here on one of my Introductions posts. Which, I think you will have gathered she has. One of the first things you notice about her work, on her blog, on her Flickr page, and various other places, is that it is all black and white.

How long have you been taking photos for? I’ve always taken photos ever since I can remember, but I guess I got more serious about it in about 1990 when I bought my first SLR – a Pentax P30 N which I still have. Why do you take photos?
