Whoa There! Some Greenland Glaciers Slowing Down

A new study reveals that not all of Greenland's glaciers behave alike, with some slowing their advance seaward in recent years, whereas others have surged in their forward march. Sea levels will continue to rise during the 21st century, as many studies have predicted, but the new findings indicate that the impact of Greenland's shedding of icebergs may not be as dramatic as worst-case scenarios had predicted. The study "is the most comprehensive analysis of ice dynamics that's ever been undertaken," says Jonathan Bamber, a glaciologist at University of Bristol in the United Kingdom who wasn't involved in the research.

Even though Greenland is a major contributor to rising sea levels—thanks to the icebergs it sheds and the meltwater running off the ice sheet that covers much of its surface—field studies of its glaciers are relatively limited. After all the surface of the Moon is covered with craters, some quite recent. There is no atmosphere to burn up the small meteors. But remember the odds for really big and dangerous rocks is still quite low, just as it is for Earth. Get off your email! You might live longer. Violence puts wear and tear on kids' DNA

The DNA of 10-year-olds who experienced violence in their young lives has been found to show wear and tear normally associated with aging, a Duke University study has found. "This is the first time it has been shown that our telomeres can shorten at a faster rate even at a really young age, while kids are still experiencing stress," said Idan Shalev, a post-doctoral researcher in psychology and neuroscience at the Duke Institute for Genome Sciences & Policy. Telomeres are special DNA sequences found at the tips of chromosomes; much like the plastic tips of shoelaces, they prevent DNA from unraveling. Emerging evidence suggests that telomeres are "master integrators," connecting stress to biological age and associated diseases.

Telomeres are known to get shorter each time cells divide, putting a limit on the number of times a given cell can go on dividing. Source: Duke University. Psychology & Sociology. The Correlation Between Music and Math: A Neurobiology Perspective

" I was both intrigued and excited, intrigued because I did not understand how music and math, two seemingly unrelated subject could possibly affect each other. I was also excited because I began to view classical music as some kind of magical potion that would transform my math skills from decent to extraordinary. When I had the opportunity to write this web paper, I immediately jumped into the topic of music and math. It turns out that there is much evidence that supports the positive effects of music on one's ability to do math.

The result of this study posed another important question. The same people who conducted the Mozart effect experiment also suggested that spatial-temporal reasoning is crucial in math. Everything you need to know about the internet

The internet went from being something exotic to being boring utility, like mains electricity or running water – and we never really noticed. So we wound up being totally dependent on a system about which we are terminally incurious. You think I exaggerate about the dependence? Well, just ask Estonia, one of the most internet-dependent countries on the planet, which in 2007 was more or less shut down for two weeks by a sustained attack on its network infrastructure. Or imagine what it would be like if, one day, you suddenly found yourself unable to book flights, transfer funds from your bank account, check bus timetables, send email, search Google, call your family using Skype, buy music from Apple or books from Amazon, buy or sell stuff on eBay, watch clips on YouTube or BBC programmes on the iPlayer – or do the 1,001 other things that have become as natural as breathing.
