Summary Few wildlife conservation efforts have been as controversial as that of the grey wolf in the Northern Rockies. Federal efforts to protect the wolf have clashed with state efforts to control wolf populations and protect livestock and game from predation by wolf packs. Idaho and Montana have been given federal authority to manage wolf numbers using public hunts. Federal officials require Idaho to maintain a population of at least 150 wolves and 10 breeding pairs. Idaho wildlife officials have boosted bag limits, expanded trapping and extended hunting seasons in some areas to help further reduce wolf populations in all corners of the state. Idaho’s wolf managers estimated 500 to 600 wolves roamed the state as of spring 2012, down from the more than 1,000 when the 2011 hunting season opened in August.

Don’t Forsake the Gray Wolf. But this success has been only partial.

Don’t Forsake the Gray Wolf

The centuries-old war against wolves continues to rage, particularly in states where the species has lost federal protection in recent years, as management of wolf populations was turned over to the states. On Friday, the federal Fish and Wildlife Service put forward a proposal that would make matters even worse. It proposed stripping the remaining federal protections for the gray wolf in the rest of the United States (with the exception of the extremely rare Mexican gray wolf in Arizona and New Mexico). Removing gray wolves from the national endangered species list in the areas where they are still protected would be a mistake. The protections should remain, so that the species can continue its recovery and expand its range, just as the bald eagle and the alligator were allowed to do. SUIT TO UNCOVER POLITICAL DEALS BEHIND GRAY WOLF DE-LISTING. Washington, DC — The federal government’s plan to remove the gray wolf from the protections of the Endangered Species Act, as detailed by a draft Federal Register notice posted today by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER), is temporarily on hold.

SUIT TO UNCOVER POLITICAL DEALS BEHIND GRAY WOLF DE-LISTING

The reasons for the indefinite delay announced this week were not revealed and neither were the records of meetings beginning in 2010 to hammer out this plan. Today PEER filed a federal lawsuit to obtain the records from those meetings. The draft Federal Register notice would strike the gray wolf from the federal list of threatened or endangered species but would keep endangered status for the Mexican wolf. Yet, no protected habitat would be delineated for the Mexican wolf, of which far fewer than 100 remain in the wild. Wild Dogs. Federal Court: Citizens have No Rights to Seek Accountability. Oregon's ban on killing wolves spurs nonlethal options

(AP) - As long as wolves have been making their comeback, biologists and ranchers have had a decidedly Old West option for dealing with those that develop a taste for beef: Shoot to kill. But for the past year, Oregon has been a "wolf-safe" zone, with ranchers turning to more modern, nonlethal ways to protect livestock. While the number of wolves roaming the state has gone up, livestock kills haven't - and now conservation groups are hoping Oregon can serve as a model for other Western states working to return the predator to the wild.

"Once the easy option of killing wolves is taken off the table, we've seen reluctant but responsible ranchers stepping up," said Rob Klavins of the advocacy group Oregon Wild. 1080science. Last year the Obama Administration removed federal protection from some of the wolves that had been restored to the northern Rockies under the Endangered Species Act. The move paved the way for controversial state-regulated wolf hunts. Wolf advocates strongly oppose the administrations decision saying the three states in the region, Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming need a cohesive management plan that allows for a much larger wolf population. "It was very disappointing when Secretary Salazar in the Obama Administration, signed off on this rushed-through Bush administration delisting package for wolves," said Doug Honnold, a lawyer with Earthjustice, who is representing conservation groups challenging the government's decision.

WDFW Now Aims To Take Out Entire Wedge Wolf Pack. State hunters are ramping up their efforts to kill wolves in northern Stevens County, and now don’t plan to stop until they’ve killed off the Wedge Pack. “The attempt now is to remove the entire pack,” said WDFW wolf policy coordinator Steve Pozzanghera this morning. The agency is loading up its toolbox for the effort to take out the eight to 11 members of the livestock-depredating group, including tasking more marksmen, trappers and biologists to the area; hunting over not only calf carcasses but roadkilled deer; hunting at all hours with a fuller array of weaponery; bringing in USDA Wildlife Services for “technical assistance” on snaring; and possibly bringing local law enforcement into the hunt.

“If we’re unsuccessful, we will consider aerial gunning,” Pozzanghera adds. More public information is expected later today. Wolves here are blamed for killing or injuring 15 calves and cows, and just yesterday two more injured calves were discovered. Viewpoint: Idaho wildlife summit a disappointment. I recently attended the three-day Wildlife Summit in Boise, Idaho. This Wildlife Summit was conceived to achieve several goals. A steady downturn in the number of U.S. hunters has forced Idaho to look for alternative sources to adjust for this continuing decline in revenue dollars. The summit was equally an attempt by Idaho Fish and Game to reach out to wildlife advocates and the non-consumptive wildlife enthusiast. Third, an attempt to gain some positive public opinion which has taken a big hit because of the bloodbath that continually prevails in their heavy-handed approach in managing wolves and other predators.

The Wildlife Summit was high tech. There were guest speakers that spoke about wildlife, humans and their involvement with and concern for wildlife, and their vision of what they were currently attempting and what needs to be achieved to aid in maintaining the balance of Idaho’s wildlife.
