Among the clothed pictures (not reproduced here) is one shot of Elfquest co-creator Wendy Pini as one of her own elves. One thing I noticed in going through the slides — mostly taken at Worldcon masquerades and a few other cons — is the great sense of whimsy that permeated SF costuming decades ago. This is something that seems to be missing, now that costuming is taken so much more seriously.

http://www.huffingtonpost.fr/ Have you ever had to buy a long-lasting insecticide-treated bed net (LLIN)? Probably not, even if you live in Africa, where nine out of ten malaria-related deaths occur. From 2004 to 2011, annual net distribution grew exponentially from 5 million to 130 million nets, yet few people have ever paid for one.

Several years ago, I pitched a freelance piece about black atheism to a prominent magazine geared toward African-Americans. The pitch was denied, but not for any real reason. "That one might be a bit, uh, hard," is all my editor said. I'd later come to find out that he was merely sheltering me from his ultra-Christian executive editor, who would never let a piece questioning religion run in the magazine. Black America's religious problem isn't that it's highly religious—most of America is religious—it's that, in my experience, it's highly religious to the point of exclusion, as if black people living their lives without God don't count.
We know how they feel about pizza , mirrors and pumpkins , but how do they feel about Easter? As it turns out, big kitties like their special eggs just as much as house cats love it when you drop a chicken egg on the kitchen floor. If you had a crush on the TARDIS from the Neil Gaiman episode of Doctor Who, well, you can now finally cuddle up and sleep with the it.

Laughing Squid

http://laughingsquid.com/ RISK! is a live show and weekly podcast “where people tell true stories they never thought they’d dare to share in public” hosted by comedian Kevin Allison ( The State ). The live show happens monthly in both New York and Los Angeles venues (and sometimes other cities ) and features like true stories from people like Janeane Garofalo, Lisa Lampanelli, Kevin Nealon, Margaret Cho, Marc Maron, Sarah Silverman, Lili Taylor, Rachel Dratch, Andy Borowitz and more. Listeners can also pitch their own stories . The podcast is a favorite listen of mine and last year I got to catch the super-entertaining live show when it was in San Francisco as part of SF Sketchfest .
Adam "MCA" Yauch —founding member of the Beastie Boys—passed away at the age of 47 this Friday following a prolonged bout with cancer. The influential music icon took his group from a garage band in Brooklyn to superstardom alongside Michael "Mike D" Diamond and Adam "Adrock" Horovitz. In addition to music, Yauch led charities for Tibetan citizens, 9/11 victims and directed several of the band's music videos. 2. http://coolhunting.com/

Morgan Spurlock would make the perfect comic book character. Hailing from West Virginia, Spurlock loves Metallica and comes from the life of an everyman, but beneath the surface is a hint of something grand and ambiguously moral. Before breaking into the big leagues (and giving himself liver dysfunction) with Super Size Me (2004), Spurlock paid people to eat whole jars of mayonnaise for his web program I Bet You Will . http://flavorpill.com/sanfrancisco
