Wicca. Pagan Living. The Sabbats of Wicca. Learn Wicca / Wicca 101 / Faerie Tradition Because witches honor nature, they have eight festivals, or Sabbats, that mark the year as it turns through its seasons. The following is basic information about these Sabbats, and includes both standard Wiccan information as well as my personal Sabbat lore and experiences, in other words, what I perceive the Sabbats to be. Samhain happens near Halloween and is when the Wiccan year begins.

My altar cloth is black, because we are in the time of year that is dark. On my altar is the harvest, our "dead Lord" whose life is in the crops and "sacrificed" when the crops are killed to become our food. This is the time of death, of honoring and communing with spirits that have passed to the other side. Yule or winter solstice happens near December 21, which is the longest darkest night of the year. Brigid or Candlemas, on February 2, is the festival of the Goddess Brigid, patron of poetry, healing, and metalsmithing. Lammas is August 1. The Sabbats of Wicca. Witch. By Doreen Valiente Hear now the words of the witches, The secrets we hid in the night, When dark was our destiny’s pathway, That now we bring forth into the light.

Mysterious water and fire, The earth and the wide-ranging air. By hidden quintessence we know them, And will and keep silent and dare. The birth and rebirth of all nature, The passing of winter and spring, We share with the life universal, Rejoice in the magickal ring. Four times in the year the Great Sabbat Returns, And the witches are seen, At Lammas and Candlemass dancing, On May Even and old Hallowe’en. When day-time and night-time are equal, When sun is at greatest and least, The four Lesser Sabbats are summoned, Again witches gather in feast. Thirteen silver moons in a year are, Thirteen is the coven’s array, Thirteen times at esbat make merry, For each golden year and a day. The power was passed down the ages, Each time between woman and man, Each century unto the other, Ere time and the ages began.

The Witches' Rune. Casting a Circle. The Purposes of a Circle A sacred circle has several purposes, the most significant of which is to define an area where formal ritual work can be performed. A circle is a place in which the rules and conditions are different to that of the everyday world. A circle is not a barrier, but a doorway to another world. To contain any magickal energy raised and to prevent its dissipation until it has been used up is another purpose of the circle. The sacred circle does not need to be physically represented (drawn or marked on the ground), it just needs to be visualized. The circle is a spiritual entity. How to Cast a Circle A circle can be cast for all magickal acts. The size of a circle varies vastly – it should be able to comfortably fit those using it. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. This completes the casting of your circle. How to Close a Circle Go to the North, hold up your blade, and say, “Guardians and spirits of the North wind, my ritual is now complete.

Barely two weeks ago, I used the following phrases to describe soup: “vegetables boiled to death,” “assaulted with too much cream,” “whatever healthy things in there cannot be tasted,” and even “what must have been a practical joke” about an especially awful one I’d ordered recently.

I admitted that I found soup boring, and my relationship to it has been on especially unstable terms this year after repeated disappointments. We then proceeded to eat soup for dinner for the next 14 days. What happened? It turns out that baked potato soup is a gateway drug, in that when we finished it, we wanted more soup. After the potato soup, we moved onto a tomato-y cabbage soup that we enjoyed, but I can assure you that the recipe isn’t ready for prime time and black bean pumpkin soup, one of our all-time favorites from the archives. It starts with soaking dried porcini, which, understandably, is the start of something wonderful as they pack so much flavor in what looks in the store like wood chips. Recovery: black bean soup with ham.

Tuesday March 6, 2007 Dealing with a small electrial fire, electrians, and finding a new place to live really caught me off guard and into the waiting arms of a big bad sickness. I hate being sick and having this flu was the absolute worst. I was achy and sore all over — even my eyeballs hurt! — so looking at a computer screen was pretty much out of the question. I slept almost all the time, my hacking cough could raise the dead, and not once did I think about food or eating.

Did you hear what I said? Food just wasn’t an issue for me for almost an entire week which has never happened to me before. In the meantime, I’ll post a recipe I wanted to write about before all of this happened. This soup would work well for vegetarians, leaving out the ham and subbing in vegetable stock, but I’m sure it would be even more wonderful with some crumbled chorizo sausage instead of the ham.

First it's important to know that there is no one and only Book of Shadows. This concept is a fictional plot device to explain why magyc is not effective without THE Book of Shadows. The idea is that if you just have the right book all your magyc will be effective. This usually sets up a dynamic between the characters where each tries to possess THE book.

Actually, the name simply refers to any book or digital folder that contains a witch's personal spells, potions, references and records. To that end, you will want to gather any and all information that works best for you. How can you tell if something will work for you? Of course, there is so much information out there no one can try everything. To get you started, here is a list of links to online books of shadows. Faded's Wicca Etc. Introduction to Spell Casting. Start by reading Is Magic Real if you haven’t already. You need to come away with at least the tentative hope that, in fact, witchcraft is real. You need to suspend your disbelief long enough to give yourself a fair chance. As far as I know, anyone can do witchcraft, with the exception of those who are mentally incompetent, intoxicated or those too young or too old to focus their will effectively.

White witchcraft, above all else, is about focus—not just mental focus but your entire Being. Can you really do witchcraft? Can you really cast white magic love spells? But seriously, I often give the following Wicca for beginner spells to acolytes to help get their astral feet wet, so to speak. The first example was about waking up at a specific time without an alarm clock. The other two examples, however, were from the author’s wife. The first one involves the everyday frustration of finding a parking place. The spell is simplicity itself. In any event, you have to park before you can walk. Wicca. Spiritual. Wicca 101.
