Issued by an independent commission chaired by retired Gen. On Tuesday, the Pentagon released the 9-member panel's findings in an 86-page report (.pdf). On page 11, the panel notes that it was only after the committee's work began that it was alerted to allegations that some 9/11 victims' unidentified remains were also handled improperly at the facility: The practice ceased in 2008.

The US military is developing software that will let it secretly manipulate social media sites by using fake online personas to influence internet conversations and spread pro-American propaganda. A Californian corporation has been awarded a contract with United States Central Command (Centcom), which oversees US armed operations in the Middle East and Central Asia, to develop what is described as an "online persona management service" that will allow one US serviceman or woman to control up to 10 separate identities based all over the world. The project has been likened by web experts to China's attempts to control and restrict free speech on the internet. Critics are likely to complain that it will allow the US military to create a false consensus in online conversations, crowd out unwelcome opinions and smother commentaries or reports that do not correspond with its own objectives.

Occupy Portland protesters made their mark on another one of the city's parks this afternoon — this time setting their sights on what many believe is the world's smallest park. Portland police arrested one person after a group of demonstrators descended upon the 452-square-inch Mill Ends Park, at Southwest Naito Parkway and Southwest Taylor Street, for a flash mob, said Sgt. Pete Simpson, a spokesman for the Portland Police Bureau. The arrest came when Cameron Scott Whitten, 20, didn't move from the street to the sidewalk, Simpson said. He was carried to the patrol car in handcuffs after refusing police requests to walk to the car to be cited and instead sat down, Simpson said.

He was booked in the Multnomah County Jail on charges of interfering with a police officer. Records show this is Whitten's third arrest at an Occupy-related event. The Portland Community College student also said last month he was exploring a mayoral run in the city's upcoming election. -- Kate Mather. Did Occupy protesters damage Elk statue? This is because criticism of Washington's policies can be alleged to be aiding Washington's enemies - which might include charities that provide aid to bombed Palestinian children and flotillas that attempt to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. Victoria Jackson Goes To Occupy Wall Street, Inflames Protesters.

Former "Saturday Night Live" actress, conservative columnist and avowed enemy of both "Glee" and gay people, Victoria Jackson took a video camera to the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City, predictably trying to inflame the supporters camped out in Zuccotti Park. She dove right into her particular brand of hateful commentary early, pointing out Ground Zero from her car window and saying "some Muslims flew in to" the Twin Towers. Once Jackson got down to the protests, she began interviewing both the protesters and those that happened to be passing by.

She began by asking what they were protesting, then seizing on their responses. She often brought up President Obama's connection to GE, calling him a Marxist and socialist. "Right now, 50 percent of people pay taxes and 50 percent do not. Continuing her argument with the same protester, she said, "If you want everyone to be equal, how are you going to make them equal in good looks and smart brains? Man Assaulted Near Washington-Jefferson Park Dies. Sen. Bernie Sanders: Congress works very well for the top 1 percent. By Eric W. DolanThursday, December 22, 2011 19:56 EDT Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on Thursday blasted the influence of corporate money on American politics during an appearance on MSNBC’s The Dylan Ratigan Show.

“The United States Congress, and to a certain degree the White House, are dominated by big money interest,” he said. “If you look at who contributes to campaigns, by and large they are very wealthy people. If you look at the lobbying effort that takes place it Washington it is beyond belief. When we look at what happened at Wall Street and the collapse of the Wall Street as a result of deregulation, we can never forget that Wall Street spent $5 billion over a ten year period lobbying for that deregulation. “I don’t look at Congress having a personality defect, people can’t get along and all that stuff, that’s not the issue,” he continued. In hopes of getting money out of politics, Sanders has introduced the Saving American Democracy Amendment to the Senate. Eric W. Eric W. Nick Fish Unveils Plan for Small-Scale "Overnight Sleeping" Sites.

Making good on a promise to find a way to allow small-scale "overnight sleeping" sites in Portland, Commissioner Nick Fish will present a resolution next week that allows qualifying churches and nonprofits to host homeless Portlanders living in cars, RVs, and motor homes. The resolution, obtained by the Mercury, was crafted with input from Commissioner Dan Saltzman's office, which runs the Bureau of Development Services (BDS). It would direct code inspectors "to not enforce code violations associated with these activities. " The pilot program would be managed by Fish's housing bureau and be reviewed in a year. Fish's chief of staff, Betsy Ames, says Saltzman is on board, and that Randy Leonard, the only other commissioner who will attend next Wednesday's Portland City Council meeting, also is expected to say yes.

The idea is modeled on a similar program in Eugene. A copy of the resolution, as well as comment from Street Roots, is after the cut. What would that "more" look like?
