Sekai Camera Support Center. Tonchidot (sekaicamera) TechCrunch 50 Presentation "SekaiCamera" by TonchiDot‬‎ Layar. Layar 3.0 Is Ready To Add New Layers To Your (Mobile) Reality. The whole idea of using your mobile phone’s camera view as a screen on top of which to add geo-specific information (also known as augmented reality) is one of the more exciting areas in the world of mobile apps.

Amsterdam-based Layar, one of the companies at pushing the boundaries of this growing movement, just released Layar 3.0, which offers a whole slew of new ways to layer data onto the real world as seen through your phone. The company opened up its augmented reality browser to developers last summer and more recently added 3D capabilities. In a blog post, the company details how developers are using its augmented reality platform. One developer created a 3D architectural model of a building in Rotterdam so that visitors to the construction site can see how a superimposed version of it will look on their phones (see video below).

Another one added cut-outs of the Beatles on Abbey Road and other places they sing about. Brightkite/Layar advertising. Location-based social network Brightkite announced this morning that it has added what it calls the first mobile Augmented Reality advertising for U.S. markets to its AR layer in the Layar augmented reality browser. Augmented Reality (AR) is a class of technologies that place data from the web on top of a camera view of the physical world. Layar is a browser for a wide variety of AR data layers, from real-estate listings to government data to messages posted to networks like Brightkite. It is available for Android phones and was available on the iPhone until it was withdrawn from the marketplace last week due to excessive crashes.

The Brightkite ads appear to be just for electronics retailer BestBuy so far, and are displayed as unique markers in your field of view when pointed towards one of the stores. Big round circles have been added to Brightkite camera-view annotations, designating the location of nearby BestBuy stores. Will consumers find the ads more useful than invasive? Brightkite Layar advertising. Augmented reality and geo-location really started to gain steam in 2009, and we expect to see even more developments in 2010. Geo-location in particular has really compelling opportunities when it comes to advertising.

Already businesses are discovering the benefits they can gain by engaging and promoting services via Foursquare — it was really only a matter of time before bigger companies would start to take notice. Today, Brightkite has launched what it calls the first augmented reality advertising solution in the U.S. Brightkite has partnered with Best Buy to run augmented reality advertisements within the Brightkite app for Android and the iPhone through the end of December. For the last few months, the company has allowed its users to see what their friends are doing around them — as well as photos of and comments about nearby places.

Now the company is just extending that idea to its natural conclusion: advertising. Of course, it also has the potential to be annoying and invasive.

SURFnet/Kennisnet project Augmented Realit. S News Round-up from its Anniversary Event – Augmented Reality B.

Yelp Sneaks Augmented Reality Into iPhone App | Gadget Lab | Wir.

Just a day after we published a feature about smartphones accelerating the development of augmented reality, Yelp sneaked a secret AR feature into an update of its iPhone app. Exclusive to iPhone 3GS owners, the feature is accessible through an Easter egg, which is activated by shaking the handset three times. A message will appear reading, "The Monocle has been activated," and then a Monocle button will appear in the upper-right corner.

Tapping that button will launch your iPhone camera, and digital overlays of business listings, accompanied by star ratings, appear on screen. The app presumably draws its geo-aware powers from the iPhone 3GS' digital compass and GPS. We use the word "sneak" because Apple doesn’t provide an open API to access live video from the iPhone’s camera, making it impossible for developers to provide AR apps without hacking the software development kit. Twitter’AR iPhoneApp with geo-tagging. Twitter 360 is an iPhone app that lets you visually see the flow of tweets from locations nearby, layered on top of your natural “real” environment. Thanks to to the iPhone’s video camera and Twitter’s new Geotagging feature, you’ll see live Tweets pop up based on your current location. You’ll be able to see where the tweets are coming from as well as how far the person tweeting is. As with most of the augmented reality iPhone apps, you’ll need the built in compass which only comes with the iPhone 3GS. This isn’t the first stab at the Augmented Reality Twitter app but, as far as we are aware, this is the first app to use the feature with Twitter’s new geo-tagging feature. What else does it bring to the table?

Augmented reality taking off on Japanese smartphones. Augment Reality for the Enterprise - SAP Employee Unveils Prototype. SAP employee Timo Elliott has unveiled a prototype for an augmented reality business intelligence iPhone app. He emphasizes that it's a prototype, not a supported product. It's not available for download yet, but Elliott gives us a look at what an augmented enterprise could look like. Elliot released some proof-of-concept mock-ups on his blog earlier this year (see our coverage), but the project is now in development at SAP in the BusinessObjects Innovation Center, which Elliot says is based on Google Labs. The app prototype enables users to mashup location information with any sort of corporate data available in an enterprise's BusinessObjects OnDemand account. Mashing up location data with CRM data has obvious, if limited, benefit - but what other sorts of uses are possible?

The current limitation of the app is the precision of location based services. What could really be useful for enterprises is the intersection of augmented reality with the Internet of Things. New Augmented Corporate Reality BI Prototype | CloudAve. Based on a blog post and proof-of-concept application earlier this year, I have been championing a SAP BusinessObjects Innovation Center project to build an “augmented corporate reality” prototype.

The idea stemmed from one of the key themes of my BI future directions presentations: that for the first time in centuries, new technology comes from the consumer world, not from governments and businesses, and so we need to adapt and adopt these technologies for corporate use. The mobile telephone is starting to become a “universal pointing device”: using the phone’s GPS location and compass, it knows where you are, and what you’re looking at. There is now a wide range of augmented reality mobile applications available on the market that help people find the nearest pizzeria, get information about a monument, or locate local twitter users. How could this functionality be used in the business world? Before I tell you more about it, let me emphasize: it’s a prototype, not a product. How it works. LeoWorld - Mephistophelian.
