American special operation forces came under fire from insurgents, some of whom were Pentagon subcontractors at ArmorGroup, a subsidiary of global security giant G4S. Pinned down, the Marines called in air support, which rained fire on the village for almost two hours. Buried in the rubble the next morning were dozens of civilians, including as many as 60 children. The problems began months earlier when ArmorGroup hired two local warlords on the U.S. intelligence payroll to provide armed guards at an airfield on the western edge of Afghanistan in 2007.

Those warlords fought for control of the weapons and money ArmorGroup was giving out.
