Splashes of Color in the Norwegian Rain: NUART 2013. Posted on September 11, 2013 The pale wan institutional hues of the Stavanger International Airport now are punctuated by the brilliant blues and stencil patterning wrapping around the control tower. Small multi-layered stencil portraits pop from post-boxes, primary color-clad children hang off of stoop stairs and balance on stacked chairs and a graffiti slathered Michaelango stands on the corner next to the eye doctors office. Turn up another street and an aerosoled sultry geisha rises, wrapped in boisterous brocade on a typically white wall in this rather monochromatic sea town.

With these new wall works by M-City, C215, Ernest Zacharevic, Martin Whatson, and Hush (respectively) and a number of others, Nuart 2013 brought a lot of color to the streets this year as it celebrated what founder Martyn Reed called “one of, if not thee, finest Nuart events yet”. These black and white figures are so realistic, pedestrians might be mystified when they pass by this wall mural by Norwegian stencil artist Anders Gjennestad.

Also known as Strøk, the artist utilizes all kinds of visual tricks, including distorted perspective and strong shadows, to produce illusions of people walking sideways on walls. Strøk's canvas is often rusty metal, wooden palettes, gritty walls, or shiny glass, that interact with his subjects. This particular piece was recently completed on a wall in the city of Porsgrunn, Norway. According to the artist's bio, "His hand cut multi layered stencils create photorealistic imagery, with depth and detail that is complex, tactile, and mentally engaging. Witty Street Art Interventions. Urban artist OaKoAK is up to it again! Since last I featured him in 2010, he has continued to come up with clever concepts on city streets, such as making Gonzo’s face from a rail in the park, painting a red heart in a fence, and more. An interesting aspect is how he tells stories through still characters, it is like we are viewing animations. Photos © OaKoAK Via Street Utopia. Street Artist Roadsworth Transforms the Streets of Montreal into a Visual Playground. In 2001 artist Peter Gibson began a guerrilla street art campaign to encourage the city of Montreal to build more bike lanes. What began as a project borne of activism eventually became an art project that continues to this day.

Assuming the name Roadsworth stating, “where Wordsworth is a poet of words, Roadsworth is a poet of roads,” the artist has cleverly modified roads, sidewalks, parking lots and any other publicly visible asphalt surface he can transform with paint.
