Nonprofit leaders: Don’t roll back tax incentives for charitable giving - The Hill's On The Money

Nonprofit leaders railed against proposals to rein in the tax break for charitable giving on Thursday — and seemed to have support from key Republican senators. At a Senate Finance Committee hearing, Brian Gallagher, CEO of United Way Worldwide, said that limiting the tax deduction — despite government projections to the contrary — would put a serious crimp in charitable giving. “I think it is rare that someone only gives to charity because of a tax incentive,” said Gallagher, who estimated that capping the deduction for donations could cost charities as much as $5.6 billion per year. http://thehill.com/blogs/on-the-money/domestic-taxes/188367-nonprofit-leaders-dont-roll-back-tax-incentives-for-charitable-giving
http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/mike-friends-blog/my-terrorists-excerpt-everyones-talking-about This week, I gave permission to London's Guardian newspaper to publish an excerpt from my new book, HERE COMES TROUBLE, before it hits the shelves next week (or, to put it another way, no American paper was going to run a 4,000-word piece from yours truly!). This excerpt, which the Guardian entitled "I Was the Most Hated Man in America," is from one of my nonfiction short stories in the book, a story called "The Execution of Michael Moore."

Is it a Crime? The Transgressive Politics of Hacking in Anonymous | Government In The Lab

Joseph Menn’s September 24, 2011 Financial Times article, “They’re watching. And they can bring you down,” covers a dynamic that has received scant attention in the mainstream news: tensions within political entity referred to as Anonymous (Anon, for short). Regrettably, Menn does not bother with any discussion of Anon’s internal dynamics and his analysis on the hackers involved in Anonymous lacks any sustained engagement with the collective’s history.

This resolution was assigned to a congressional committee on January 7, 2011, which will consider it before possibly sending it on to the House or Senate as a whole. The majority of bills never make it past this point. https://www.popvox.com/bills/us/112/hjres17
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other federal and state agencies are combining forces and sharing information to better understand and combat the hacker collective Anonymous and a splinter faction known as Lulz Security (LulzSec).

Lost, Abused and Neglected for a Profit | Truthout

Guillermo Gomez-Sanchez is a 50-year-old legal resident with a mental disability. In 2004, Gomez was detained because of a dispute at a grocery store over a bag of tomatoes. His detention led him into a labyrinth of abuse and neglect – in an immigration system that increasingly puts profit over justice by handing the reigns to private prison corporations. Cuéntame’s Immigrants For Sale campaign has documented the case of Guillermo, who got lost in this system, while his mother Dolores Gomez-Sanchez spent years desperately searching for answers. The problem: Guillermo was sent to a private detention facility operated by Corrections Corporation of America (CCA). Dolores approached immigration authorities, but time and again was told that because Guillermo was in a CCA facility his case was no longer their problem.
