Researchers at Sweden's KTH Royal Institute of Technology say they have found further proof that the wolf ancestors of today's domesticated dogs can be traced to southern East Asia -- findings that run counter to theories placing the cradle of the canine line in the Middle East.

First dogs came from East Asia, genetic study confirms

Dr Peter Savolainen, KTH researcher in evolutionary genetics, says a new study released Nov. 23 confirms that an Asian region south of the Yangtze River was the principal and probably sole region where wolves were domesticated by humans. Data on genetics, morphology and behaviour show clearly that dogs are descended from wolves, but there's never been scientific consensus on where in the world the domestication process began.

"Our analysis of Y-chromosomal DNA now confirms that wolves were first domesticated in Asia south of Yangtze River -- we call it the ASY region -- in southern China or Southeast Asia," Savolainen says. The Y data supports previous evidence from mitochondrial DNA. Ancient domesticated dog skull found in Siberian cave: 33,000 years old. Every January 27th I honor them through an astronaut-themed gathering, during which my friends and I watch the Right Stuff and drink Tangtinis. Originally this event was titled Gus Grissom Day, but on second thought the official (and surely, one day, nationally recognized) Gus Grissom Day will be on April 4th (his birthday rather than in honor and remembrance of his death), oddly coinciding with square root day, which luckily does not come around very often. This Friday, I will definitely raise my Tangtini to you, crosis101, as we remember those we lost in 1967. Ad astra per aspera, my friend. Documentary List - Documentary Den.

That, according to Professor Mark Hodson, is how it is for scientists at the Diamond synchrotron in Oxfordshire. With its curving walls, lined with walkways, pipes and colourful, clunky-looking machines and gadgets, it’s a sight that wouldn’t seem out of place in an early episode of ‘Doctor Who’. The status quo of electric cars: better batteries, same range. The 2010 Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi i-MiEV have exactly the same range as the 1908 Fritchle Model A Victoria: 100 miles (160 kilometres) on a single charge From about 1895 to the mid-1920s, and following the bicycle craze of the 1890s, electric cars shared the road with petrol and steam powered cars.

The status quo of electric cars: better batteries, same range

EV's were comparatively slow, heavy, and had a smaller range than their alternatives. During the very early years, however, electric automobiles were the most popular option for a short time, mainly because of two reasons. Firstly, they were easy to start, while a gasoline car had to be cranked up and a steam powered car required a long firing-up time (not unlike a wood gas car). Secondly, there were few paved roads outside the city at the turn of the 20th century, which made the limited range of EV's not that problematic. By 1912, the gasoline car had already taken over the largest share of the automobile sales (more than 90 percent). More than 7,500-year-old fish traps found in Russia.
