I wouldn't recommend bothering with Au Lapin Agile if you're not fluent in French and/or appreciate French humor. Hefty cover charge and pricey drinks. There's a fabulous singer, Joannie, we've enjoyed over the years, and as recently as last September) at La Crémaillère 1900, who performs the Piaf classics (and again, per requests). And, usually, a trio that performs same at La Mère Catherine, also on Place du Tertre. You don't have to have dinner (which at either is surprising of excellent quality at reasonable prices) if you can manage to snare seats on the sidewalk where you can hear the music/vocalists. We trecked all the way to Le Vieux Belleville one visit and found it a bit too, umm, "lively" (with dreadful, if cheap, food) for us.

He is quite obsessed with this ancient city which can be quite inscrutable given that most interesting stuff happens quietly in small, cloistered, traditional wooden buildings away from the main thoroughfares. We spent a night at an inn, let ourselves get lost in theNisshiki central market, journey the zen paths of temple grounds and shopped for local goods which are still only made and sold in Japan.

Lynn happily decided to write the Lunch with Lynn/Under 20 Eats feature this month Through a certain ironic piston, the American connection, we heard about a bistrot on the Ile de la Cité, a block from Notre Dame, 26 rue Chanoinesse, the Au Bougnat, a name which means a coal-seller turned café-owner from the Aveyron, in south central France. Ironically, comparing then-and-now pictures of the Au Bougnat building in the 17th century and the way it looks today, one is struck by the fact that little has changed. What remains are the architectural facts: the building began as a late 18th century house whose hallways were paved with tombstones that no doubt came from the numerous churches that existed in the area.

Situated in and around the convenient “Triangle de Choisy,” a triangular plot of land created by the crossing of three large roads (Avenue d’Ivry, Avenue de Choisy, and Boulevard Masséna) and accessible by several metro stations (Porte d’Ivry, Porte de Choisy, Tolbiac, Olympiades). Belleville is full of small shops and markets but its distinguishing feature is its wonderful restaurant scene. The place that I decided to try satisfying my cravings (after pondering the several possible choices for a long time) was a Vietnamese restaurant called Dong Huong located right off the metro stop Belleville.
