Jancis Robinson tells DWCC we need to make the most of this "golden age" of wine. We are living in a “golden age” of wine and we need to make the most of it before it is taken over by bureaucracy and censorship was the personal plea of Jancis Robinson MW at this weekend’s Digital Wine Communications Conference in Montreux, Switzerland. Robinson called on everyone in the wine trade, whatever area they are in, to make the most of this “golden age” before some “tragedy” comes along and we have to abide by the kind of anti-drinking legislation in place in France which severely limits how people can talk or communicate about wine.

Never before has wine been so “appreciated” or been of such “good quality” anywhere in the world, claimed Robinson. But it was no longer just enough to simply write about wine, to stand out you have to be offering something genuinely different. “We all have the same challenge in how to stay relevant,” said Robinson. She believed there were “still massive opportunities” to do that across the wine world. Image uploaded by @HS_UserImages (Hootsuite User Image) Bacon and Wine Pairing | Republic of Bacon. With bacon becoming more popular, many people are trying it in different meals. Eating bacon at dinner used to seem strange; now it is perfectly natural. But as more people eat bacon with dinner, new questions are popping up. One of the questions that comes up when you are serving bacon at dinner that we don’t often address on Republic of Bacon is: what alcohol can you pair bacon with?

The short answer is that you can pair it with a whole lot of different beverages – it depends on what you cook your bacon with. But aside from these concerns, if you are looking for a good standard option to serve with bacon, wine is always a good bet. 1. Although bacon, being pork, is officially “white meat,” it straddles the traditional line between a more heavy, hearty flavour like roast beef and the lightness of turkey. 2. With bacon’s strong flavours, it is important not to choose a wine that will not fall apart when contrasted with it. 3. Tannins are the “dry” flavour in wines. While few wine lovers will be in the league of the collector who paid nearly half a million US dollars for a crate of 1978 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti at Christie’s in Hong Kong last year, wine collecting is becoming an increasingly profitable and popular pastime – which is leading to growing demand for designer rooms in which to house this tasty asset.

Wine rooms in new luxury homes have moved a world away from a simple temperature-controlled cupboard to a full tasting experience. Indeed some – such as those seen in Finchatton’s developments in Chelsea’s Manresa Road and Belgravia’s Chester Square – are like art galleries, designed to make you stop and stare. They also show off the height of new technology, including finger-recognition entry and wireless inventory systems. If the old-style wine rooms were simply about storage, today’s are about the whole social scene that goes with drinking – not just collecting – fine wines.

Austria introduces new sparkling wine quality tiers | decanter.com. Austria has created a three-tier quality pyramid for its emergent sparkling wine sector to improve its reputation and help consumers to better understand the category.

The new system (pictured above) underlines the growing importance of sparkling wine to Austrian producers. It was launched this month by the Austrian Sparkling Wine Committee and the Austrian Wine Marketing Board, but is not expected to be officially incorporated into the Austrian Wine Law until spring 2015. ‘There has been growing interest in our sparkling wines, especially after the success achieved with Austria's quality still wines,’ Benedikt Zacherl, general manager of the 18-month-old Austrian Sparkling Wine Committee, told Decanter.com. ‘Production and exports of our sparkling wines are expected to rise. Austria produces around 12m bottles of sparkling wine annually and exports up to 2.5m bottles. The three tiers: Related News: The Wine Wankers sur Twitter : "It's #wine on! Italian woes see France regain pole position. The 271 million hectolitre worldwide total predicted for this year represented a 6% decline on 2013, itself a 37-year low for the industry, after a number of large volume countries struggled with difficult weather conditions during the growing season.

Among these was Italy, which lost its number one spot after wet weather saw the country receive 73% above average rainfall during July alone. Production estimates suggested total production volumes of 44.4m hl, a 15% decline on last year. Eastern Europe was also hit hard, with Bulgaria, Romania and Slovakia seeing production slide by 30%, 20% and 16% respectively.

Despite some problematic weather of its own, France saw a 10% increase in production against last year to hit 46.2m hl. There was also a strong rise of 16% for Germany, where volumes hit 9.7m hl. Outside Europe, the US recorded its third consecutive increase to reach a predicted 2014 harvest of around 22.5m hl. This article is also published in the Financial Times. In my little puddle of vinous life I am becoming aware of the most massive U-turn on the part of an increasing number of thoughtful wine producers. Interestingly, this is nothing to do with marketing but sheer disaffection with the wines they made in the past. Take Alberto Antonini (pictured, in superseded setting), a respected 55-year-old consultant winemaker with professional qualifications from Bordeaux and Davis in California.

He has made wine in California, Argentina, Chile, Spain, South Africa, Canada, Romania, Armenia, Uruguay, Australia and his native Italy. He admits, 'When I think of what I was saying 20 years ago, it seems like a different planet.' 'I grew up being told that the New World had no terroir,' laughed Antonini, 'but it's amazing how you realise terroir is everywhere. The same revisionist views can be heard throughout the winemaking world. And it is not just relative newcomers who are changing their tune. Instagram. From €12.90, £16.99 Find this wine This wine is truly exceptional for all sorts of reasons and I can't tell you what fun it was to drink, not just taste. Valencia is not a region often associated with exciting, nervy wine. The grape variety from which this wine is primarily made, Mandó, is described as nearly extinct even in our Wine Grapes tome*. And although it is becoming a little more common, it is still highly unusual for a wine to be made solely in clay jars or tinajas. But Parotet 2012 fulfils all these conditions. Celler del Roure was established by Pablo Calatayud in the hills of Moixent south west of the Mediterranean port of Valencia in the mid 1990s. This young red blend Celler del Roure, Parotet 2012 Valencia is mainly Mandó with 25% of the local speciality Monastrell (Mourvèdre).

Nor is the wine at all heavy, despite its 14.5% alcohol content. Last Saturday, we visited bodega El Celler del Roure in Moixent. After that, a great surprise!!! Wine Beats Yogurt in Health Stakes. Probiotic levels in wine beat more traditional dairy sources of good bacteria, a new study in Spain reveals. Yet more good news for wine lovers, after scientists announced that healthy probiotics bacteria have been discovered in wine and may be beneficial for people's health. The bad news is that the process of adding sulfites (or sulfur dioxide) to wine, kills them off, meaning either winemakers have to isolate the probiotics before adding sulfur or drinkers have to stick to natural wines with no added sulfites. Researchers in Spain isolated 11 strains of bacteria from wine, including Lactobacillus, which is also found in yogurt, as well as Oenococcus and Pediococcus bacteria, which are associated with the winemaking process, according to the LiveScience website.

In the study, the researchers examined the ability of the bacteria they isolated from wine to survive in conditions similar to those found in the human gastrointestinal system. Spain has over 2.9 million acres planted—making it the most widely planted wine producing nation and the third largest wine producer in the world. Spain’s vineyards produce fewer grapes and space out the vines because many of its regions are dry so the water distribution needs to nourish the vineyards adequately.

The country has an abundance of native red grape varieties, including Tempranillo, Garnacha, Carignan and Mourvedre. The wines described below will include most of the grapes mentioned above, so read on if you are interested! Wine for Cats in Japan is Called Nyan Nyan Nouveau. You never have to drink alone again, because now you can drink with your cats. At least in Japan you can, because a Japanese company called B&H Lifes has begun selling wine made specifically for cats. This special feline libation is called “Nyan Nyan Nouveau.” As Kotaku reports, “nyan nyan” is the Japanese equivalent of “meow meow.” (Oh hey, remember Nyan Cat?) This cat wine doesn’t really contain any alcohol, but it does contain juice made from Cabernet grapes, along with catnip.

So just accept it. It’s wine. Nyan Nyan Nouveau costs 399 yen (or $4) for a bottle, and the company is only producing a thousand of them, so you should probably act fast. MORE: Killer Hangover? Tasting Rioja: Wines from a Region - Wine Writer, Wine Education, Wine Community. To begin with, Rioja is a region in Spain, not a grape. To say that you like Rioja wine is like saying that you like Champagne or Burgundy wines. Rioja generally runs south of the mountains along a river with moderate climate that is less windy. It has three regions: alta, baja, and alavesa. Each region has slightly different climates in which different grapes thrive. I tried six wines from Rioja. Brazil Is Crushing Wine And Tech. With one of the largest economies in the world and a growing middle class, quality wine consumption in Brazil is booming. From 2001 to 2011, the value of wine imported to Brazil rose from $65.2 million to $261.6 million USD.

The trend in domestic wine production has been no different. In 2004, Brazil produced 94.8 million liters of quality wine. In 2013, just nine years later, the country produced an astounding 173.5 million liters of quality wine. With a population of just over 200 million, Brazil consumes an estimated 355 million liters of wine each year. This makes Brazil the second biggest wine market in South America, placing below Argentina and above Chile. And so it is no surprise that the number of Vivino users in Brazil is also rising, mirroring the growth of the Brazilian wine market.

Through August of 2014, over 711,000 people in Brazil have downloaded the Vivino app. Despite the remarkable growth and popularity of wine in Brazil, there is still a long way to go.
