How many Syrians have become casualties of the conflict since it began in March, 2011? At least 115,000 Syrians died due to fighting as of Oct. 17, 2013. Source: Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (an opposition group) 2. How many of the casualties are civilians? Approximately 41,000. 3. Approximately 47,000. 4. Approximately 21,000. (3,000 casualties are uncategorized.) 5.

A clear majority of Syrians actually support the government. The last polls taken suggest that 55% to 70% of Syrian people want to see Bashar Al-Assad remain in government. Support for the government has certainly also increased since the last poll was taken due to disillusionment with the foreign elements in the rebel alliance. Interview with Whistleblower Karen Hudes. Kahudes. 'Super-Entity' Of 147 Companies At Center Of World's Economy, Study Claims. A Swiss study appears to have uncovered what anti-capitalist activists have been claiming for years -- that the global economy is controlled by a small group of deeply interconnected entities.

But don't grab a pitchfork and head to the nearest Occupy protest just yet. Systems researchers say this isn't the result of an Illuminati-type global conspiracy, but rather a natural force to be expected. "Such structures are common in nature," complex systems expert George Sudihara told NewScientist. According to the study's authors -- a trio of systems researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology -- the research isn't ideologically motivated. Instead, they say, it's the first attempt at mapping the power structure of the global economy, an effort that may help to prevent future financial crises.

What they found, they say, was an economy so deeply interconnected that its structure is alarmingly susceptible to shocks. These 6 Corporations Control 90% Of The Media In America. PS_cache/arxiv/pdf/1107/1107.5728v2.pdf. The capitalist network that runs the world - physics-math - 19 October 2011.

AS PROTESTS against financial power sweep the world this week, science may have confirmed the protesters' worst fears.

An analysis of the relationships between 43,000 transnational corporations has identified a relatively small group of companies, mainly banks, with disproportionate power over the global economy. The study's assumptions have attracted some criticism, but complex systems analysts contacted by New Scientist say it is a unique effort to untangle control in the global economy. Pushing the analysis further, they say, could help to identify ways of making global capitalism more stable. The idea that a few bankers control a large chunk of the global economy might not seem like news to New York's Occupy Wall Street movement and protesters elsewhere (see photo). But the study, by a trio of complex systems theorists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, is the first to go beyond ideology to empirically identify such a network of power.

Glenn Greenwald's Hilarious Denial About His Support for Iraq War

After all, I do actually agree with him far more than I disagree. It’s just that, well, he’s unbelievably irritating and the more I read him the more annoyed I get. We had a pretty big traffic spike here at the Banter over the past couple of days, mostly because Sam Harris linked to us in a piece he wrote defending himself from Glenn Greenwald’s assertion that he was a closet racist.

I’m actually (mostly) siding with Greenwald on the debate because I find Harris to be a pedantic fundamentalist when it comes to his anti religious views, and I believe Greenwald correctly nails him for disproportionally focusing on Islam. Dave Lindorff Defines “Limited Hangout” and “Controlled Opposition” By Scott Creighton (H/T mangrove) Dave Lindorff recently wrote a childishly petty diatribe about Naomi Wolf because she dared to ask questions about the legitimacy of the Edward Snowden psyop.
