(see World Bank Policy Research Working Paper 3693, September 2005 Greater Mumbai Region (GMR), which constitutes the core of the Mumbai metropolitan area. The GMR, with apopulation of 11.9 million people in 2001, occupies 468 sq. km. This makes Mumbai one of the most densely populated cities in the world. I know that the poor in such countries do not own cars but I did not know how far they walked to work or how long their commute takes. Here are some interesting facts from their study: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. An interesting “Green City” question concerns planning for future population and income growth in this city. Urban Planning. OK, not always rain. But rain often enough. The paper is a public notice describing a planning application for some kind of ‘development’ somewhere in the vicinity. If it’s a significant development, and very close to your property, you may also get a notification in the post. However, this bit of A4 paper, via the local council, is essentially the only attempt to communicate how a neighbourhood may be about to change. For something as fundamental as this—how your actual, physical neighbourhood may change—it seems little more than a token gesture. Its 15,372 residential units, in 35 high rise buildings and seven clusters of townhouses, make it the largest single residential development in the United States.[7] It sits on 320 acres (1.3 km2) but only 20% of the land was developed, leaving many green spaces. Co-op City is divided into five sections. The development was built on landfill; the original marshland still surrounds it.
