The research was carried out on the velvet belly lanternshark, a small species found in the deep waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. The scientists believe that while the light-up spines can be seen by larger, potentially dangerous fish, they are harder for the shark's prey to spot. The study is published in the Nature journal Scientific Reports. The McGill University team discovered the popular tile-matching puzzle could train both eyes to work together. In a small study, in Current Biology with 18 adults, it worked better than conventional patching of the good eye to make the weak one work harder. The researchers now want to test if it would be a good way to treat children with the same condition. UK studies are already under way. An estimated one in 50 children has lazy eye, known medically as amblyopia. Continue reading the main story. Making of Europe unlocked by DNA.

DNA sequenced from nearly 40 ancient skeletons has shed light on the complex prehistoric events that shaped modern European populations.

Making of Europe unlocked by DNA

A study of remains from Central Europe suggests the foundations of the modern gene pool were laid down between 4,000 and 2,000 BC - in Neolithic times. These changes were likely brought about by the rapid growth and movement of some populations. The work by an international team is published in Nature Communications. Decades of study of the DNA patterns of modern Europeans suggests two major events in prehistory significantly affected the continent's genetic landscape: its initial peopling by hunter-gatherers in Palaeolithic times (35,000 years ago) and a wave of migration by Near Eastern farmers some 6,000 years ago.

(in the early Neolithic) Family tree The latest paper reveals that events some time after the initial migration of farmers into Europe did indeed have a major impact on the modern gene pool. Science & Environment - Antarctica: Engine of ocean life

This high, barren, white desert is so remote and so inhospitable that no human beings have ever made it their natural home. But despite this, the continent is teaming with life, the majority of it in the rich oceans that surround the ice. Here, whales, seals, penguins and sea birds gorge on the rich variety of sea life, which isin turn fuelled by the nutrient rich waters. But this is not a local phenomenon - the effects of Antarctica’s productivity is felt across the planet. The waters are an engine that drives productivity in all oceans, helping create some of the world’s richest fishing grounds... for both animals and people.
