Over the last 21 years, we have worked with schools to develop synthetic phonics programs and, latterly, grammar programs to cater for early years learning. We know that children at a young age display a good knowledge of how to use language: they already use perfect tenses such as “I have been playing”, they will use the continuous tense; “I was watching television”.

We shouldn’t view the teaching of grammar as difficult or something children will not be able to deal with but as something to get excited about. Grammar gives them a better understanding of what they are already using. Taking a child beyond their initial experience is all part of learning and hugely rewarding for child and for the teacher. As the child constructs sentences with the tools they’re being given then a stability develops that doesn’t exist if the child is expected to just pick it up through reading in context. How Students Benefit From Using Social Media 12.98K Views 0 Likes A lot of criticism has been leveled at social media and the effect it has on the way students process and retain information, as well as how distracting it can be. However, social media offers plenty of opportunities for learning and interactivity, and if you take a moment to think about it, it's not too hard to see how students benefit from using social media. 10 African-American History Month Teaching Resources 1.26K Views 0 Likes This week’s Featured Ten Learnist boards are dedicated to African-American history month. So...You Wanna Be A Blogger. So this is a blog. Yep. It really is, or at least I want it to be. This is a space for me to reflect, share, learn and grow with anyone who stops by. It has been a wonderful experience for me and I really do enjoy working on this. Besides the professional growth, blogs can be a wonderful addition to any classroom too. So you are thinking? Fear not kind reader! First, you are going to need a space. Blogger-This is my platform of choice. And there are apps for all these so you can blog on the go. Still confused with all the options and how to get the most of of what you choose? Ok. So you have your space all set up and you have a working knowledge of how things work.

Maybe you are thinking about staying away from the personal reflection stuff (although I really, really encourage it) and you want to do just a Class Blog or have your students blogging. So how about some more resources? This is just a handful of everything I have collected about blogs and blogging. Digital Storytelling with Voicethread (and How to Do It Offline) As regular readers of this blog will know, I love doing things in class that are simple yet productive and full of student-generated content. It might be something like a drawing activity that leads into a whole series of other tasks, a couple of everyday items as the basis of discussion, or, as featured on my recent guest post on Teaching Village, a basic digital camcorder and some very creative young minds. Another simple but effective web 2.0 tool I really like using is Voicethread.

I love the interactivity it offers with different people able to leave messages on the same presentation slide as well as the option to combine images or text with audio or video comments. At the start of the school year, I was asked at work if I knew of any ways to make the activities we do for the school wiki more interactive and Voicethread was the first thing that came to mind. “Great - do it” they said. “Sure,” I replied. . (..pause..) “Isn’t there a way to do it without all that?” Games to Learn English - For Students.
