Mrs. Patton's Patch: Math Anchor Charts from the Year

I hope you are enjoying your summer! I have been busy moving classrooms and schools, because yet again I have a new assignment next year. This one I'm pretty excited about. Our district is creating an academy for the highly gifted. I interviewed and was selected as one of the teachers. Anyway, I was going through pictures from this past school year, and I thought I should share some of my anchor charts that I didn't get to post yet. This one was about what my students determined all triangles have. This one was about what my students determined all quadrilaterals have. This helped them when we were learning about fractions. Not my best anchor chart, but this was inspired by some I'd found on Pinterest.

Daily 5 Math

Daily 5 Math is a program inspired by the Daily 5 ELA program developed by the Sisters. I saw a need of something sustainable to help differentiate my math instruction in a split class and I wanted to ensure that students were meaningfully engaged in active learning activities instead of doing rote busywork. Using correct mathematical terms can seem like learning a new language! Students won't simply absorb newly taught math terms when presented throughout the lesson. Instead, the best approach is to introduce new vocabulary through explicit instruction, in the context of meaningful math examples. Students will construct meaning as the teacher repeatedly connects the term with the definition as they are engaging in mathematical investigations.

A Maths Dictionary for Kids 2015 Full Site by Jenny Eather. Math Teaching Strategies: The Language of Math. One of the best math teaching strategies is teaching math concepts through the use of math word walls.

Math Teaching Strategies: The Language of Math

It really is all about the words, I have discovered, and teaching the language of math is critical to teaching math concepts and procedures. I honestly don't think I could ever teach math without a word wall ! We have time every day for reviewing the words, and it is the most helpful strategy I know for teaching vitally important math terminology. Wall words should also be used to support reading since reading is the most important skill children learn in school. National Library of Virtual Manipulatives.
