Including dyslexic learners in a large language class may seem very challenging, but a few simple strategies can make learning more accessible for all.

Inclusive Language Teaching – ELT well

Sometimes it is suggested that students who have a SpLD should not have to learn another language, but should instead use the time to work on their first language skills. While this policy may be well-intentioned, there are some strong arguments for everybody having the opportunity to learn another language: it seems wrong to disadvantage some students like this by insisting they remain monolingual in our increasingly global culture;for EAL/ESOL learners there is little choice but to learn English, if they are to have any independence;research suggests there are many benefits in learning another language, from improving phonological processing to facilitating a broader world view and greater tolerance of diversity and unpredictability.

The arguments for excluding learners from language classes do not really stack up in comparison. All Places in the Atlas on One Map. Atlas Obscura catalogues the most unusual, surprising, and amazing places around the world, thanks to the discoveries shared by our intrepid community of travelers and explorers. There are now more than 20,400 incredible hidden wonders listed in the Atlas, and we’ve plotted each and every one of them on this interactive map. The possibilities are vast, from the Icelandic witchcraft museum to the tree goats of Morocco, to Galileo’s middle finger, to the Skeleton Lake of India and thousands of other architectural oddities, natural wonders, catacombs and crypts, and unique collections across the world’s continents and oceans. Six favourite teaching online activities. A guest post from Lindsay Clandfield.

Six favourite teaching online activities

Lindsay is a well-known ELT author, teacher and teacher trainer, and a person who never seems to run out of original and inspiring ideas! I’ve been lucky enough to work with him on a variety of projects over the years. He was one the first online moderators on our The Consultants-E online courses, and set the standards very high indeed. Below he shares more of his great ideas, this time for online teaching activities. You can check out my own guest post of six favourite teaching online activities on Lindsay’s blog! Photo by Flnz To celebrate the launch of our new book, Teaching Online (published by Delta Publishing), Nicky and I decided to invite each other for a guest post on our respective blogs.

The following then, are my favourite six activities that I use regularly when teaching online courses. 1 My window, my world This is a getting-to-know-you activity. It’s a great way to get a window into what the other people on your course are like. 2 Kinds of People. Treatabel. What this slice lacks in refined sugar, it makes up for in its infinite potential for hashtags: #dairyfree, #paleo, #vegan, #raw, #glutenfree, #cleaneating etc.

The only food trend – gluten free – is one I follow by force, not fashion. That being said, I secretly love health food crazes as they encourage trying new things with food. I’m not about to activate an almond or anything, but I genuinely enjoyed the added challenge of making something in a novel way. I especially enjoy how mint leaves themselves lended their colour to the green layer! I have never been the hugest fan of vegan treats, let alone raw ones, but the Pana Chocolate cafe in Melbourne successfully swayed me to believe that such alternatives could be better than the real thing.
