Certainly we all know that studying makes for more successful learners. Abraham Lincoln clearly knew the value of studying when he said, “I will study and get ready, and perhaps my chance will come.” I doubt that Abraham could have imagined the neat Web 2.0 flashcard-type applications that our students can now use to help them with their studies. I wish my daughter had access to StudyStack when she was studying for her Physician Assistant certification. A different repository of electronic flashcards can be found online at Flashcard DB. When we think of online photo sharing, we typically think of sites like Flickr and Picasa where photos are hosted and organized by users.

Though these sites definitely serve a purpose in helping us host and share our photos, they don't do a great job at collectively organizing and displaying photos by content type or subject matter. Fotopedia, a photo encyclopedia site that launches to the public today, hopes to become the Wikipedia for photos by centralizing the photo experience around user-created topics and subject matters. The sleek web interface is coupled with a desktop application for a community experience on site or off.With Fotopedia, users can create or edit pages, which are photo-driven articles, and can use the desktop application to add photos from their desktop library, or online libraries like Flickr, Picasa, and Facebook. Fotopedia articles can also include a Google Map and Wikipedia info, but the experience centers around the top photos that make the page slideshow.

If so, you’re probably spending this holiday vacation week trying out all kinds of new apps. Here are ten that I recommend getting started with. Evernote is the Swiss Army knife of iPad apps. I use Evernote for a little bit of everything from bookmarking websites to dictating notes to myself. The app automatically syncs with my online Evernote account so that I can access my notes, bookmarks, and saved files from any computer or device that is connected to the web. I subscribe to the RSS feeds of a few hundred blogs and websites. If you want to make your own short instructional videos for students, Knowmia Teach is an app you have to try. Box is another service that I use for file storage and sharing. It took me a while to come around to Pinterest, but now that I have I really like it.
