Survival Gardening: Part 2. Survival Cache The answer to everyone’s question is “No”, we are not too late to get started on our Survival Garden for this year, not for most of the population living in the United States and Canada.
It keeps snowing on me here in Utah, so I’m still waiting. This is the 2nd post in a series on Survival Gardening Read Part 1: Survival Gardening I just moved into a new place and so I haven’t been able to do my fall preparation like I normally would, but that’s just the way it is sometimes, so don’t sweat the small stuff. Survival Gardening. And a Way to Relax and De-Stress Survival gardening can be fun, relaxing and actually quite simple… Many people seem to think they don’t have enough space for a garden but the areas where you can learn how to grow a basic vegetable garden are endless.
Yep, I am talking about those spaces we try to fill in with all kinds of flowers, shrubs, and even in some cases, gravel, so that it looks nice…. :) Plant your veggies there. Along Side Your House. Survival Garden: Part 1. Growing A Survival Garden May Soon Become A Necessity!

For any off-the-gridder or survivalist, having a safe, adequate, and reliable source of water is just about as basic as it gets.
Water independence is the clear goal for all who want to be prepared for all contingencies, and digging your own well is the obvious way to set yourself up in anticipation of a time when utility companies can no longer be relied upon to supply vital services to their customers. But digging a traditional well is not the only option. There is another type of well that is perfectly capable of providing sufficient supplies of fresh, clean, potable water to meet the needs of most households, especially if at least a degree of water conservation is practiced. Driven-point wells are a convenient and affordable alternative, and in most instances they can be installed without the use of expensive or complicated equipment, which can make them an amazing project for the hands-on type who prefers the do-it-yourself approach.
Survival: Emergency Water. Solar still. Solar still built into a pit in the ground Solar still "Watercone" A solar still is a simple way of distilling water, using the heat of the Sun to drive evaporation from humid soil, and ambient air to cool a condenser film.
Two basic types of solar stills are box and pit stills. How to Make a Solar Still for Purifying Water in the Wilderness. Desert Survival: The Solar Still (DesertUSA) There was the man in tattered clothing, his body sweaty, his swollen eyes squinting over miles of sand.
Cattle skulls and scorpions scattered the ground while vultures circled overhead awaiting their imminent feast. In a futile last glance, he held himself up with shaking arms. Then his head cocked to the side like a confused dog -- could it really be? Practical Survivor. Water procurement during a survival situation could possibly be your number one concern.
The length of time you body will survive without proper hydration varies under different conditions. Increase in ambient temperature and activity will lessen your chances of survival. Under arid conditions the human body can succumb to dehydration within a few days. Water Procurement - Water Sources. Water is one of your most urgent needs in a survival situation.
You can‘t live long without it, especially in hot areas where you lose water rapidly through perspiration. Even in cold areas, you need a minimum of 2 liters of water each day to maintain efficiency. More than three-fourths of your body is composed of fluids. Your body loses fluid as a result of heat, cold, stress, and exertion. To function effectively, you must replace the fluid your body loses. Water Sources Almost any environment has water present to some degree. Primitive Water Procurement. Water is the most important asset that our body needs to survive and one of the few things we can’t survive very long without! Shelter is usually your number one priority in any survival situation but water and shelter go hand in hand.
You should place your shelter reasonably close to your water source. This will make life much easier because I guarantee you that you will grow tired very quickly of having to hike a mile to get a drink. So be mindful of shelter placement first. There are so many methods for procuring water in the wilderness that I will only list a few here. Disclaimer: Our ancestors have been drinking water from streams for centuries and have built an immunity to many micro organisms and this can be done by modern day man as well but usually not without a bout of sickness once or twice. Water Procurement. HYDRATION BACKPACKS - Canteens & Hydration Systems - Field & Survival Gear / Disaster Preparedness - Special Forces Gear. Better than Bleach: Use Calcium Hypochlorite to Disinfect Water. Knowing how to make your water safe to drink can not only keep you healthy – it could save your life. We often take for granted access to safe, uncontaminated, potable water. So much so that many people do not have the means or knowledge necessary to destroy disease causing organisms that may be lurking in their water supply.
Water Purificaiton Methods for Survival, Emergency, & Backpacking. Water is a top priority as you can’t survive beyond three days without it. Unclean drinking water can have harmful bacteria, protozoa, cryptosporidiums, viruses, and chemicals in it. Waterborne illnesses can cause flu-like symptoms, watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, substantial loss of weight, bloating, increased gas, nausea, fever, chills, coughing, muscle aches, cramps, blurred vision, difficulty breathing, seizures, paralysis, and even death.
You don’t want to mess around with water that has not been purified. Take the necessary precautions and purify your water before you drink it. Simple rules like drinking clear water or water that is moving quickly don’t always apply. These are the most common methods to purify water in survival or backpacking setting. Chef! Homemade MREs. For quite a while now, I've wanted to make up my own "MREs" for my Get Home Bag (GHB). I was recently out scouting some properties, and realized that my GHB only had some packs of tuna and some candy in them. I had broken my own Cardinal Rule - If you use it, replace it immediately.
So, I went about making up some MRE packages. Now, these are not true MREs, in that their shelf life is less than half of the 5 years of a commercial MRE, but I figured they were WAY less expensive (remember this later on in the post...). I assembled my "ingredients" based on "Best By" date, calories and protein content. The idea was to put long-life food together and vacuum seal it in a FoodSaver bag. Food Storage 101, What to Store. April 26, 2014, by Ken Jorgustin The first real tip here for ‘Food Storage 101′ is this: Store what you will eat! You can spend lots of time analyzing calories, nutritional content, and other factors, but I think the bottom line here is if you store what you eat on a daily basis, I think you’ll be just fine.
Here are more basic tips to get started with food storage: (UPDATED) Note: When I said “you’ll be just fine” regarding simply storing more foods that you already eat, let me emphasize that this philosophy will get you through all short term emergency situations, most medium term disasters, but will probably come up short in the event of a complete long-term collapse (but that’s not ‘Food Storage 101′) WISE Grab N' Go Bucket 60 Serving Food Supply.
