Survival Gardening: Part 2. How To Create An Off The Grid Source Of Water

Water independence is the clear goal for all who want to be prepared for all contingencies, and digging your own well is the obvious way to set yourself up in anticipation of a time when utility companies can no longer be relied upon to supply vital services to their customers. But digging a traditional well is not the only option. There is another type of well that is perfectly capable of providing sufficient supplies of fresh, clean, potable water to meet the needs of most households, especially if at least a degree of water conservation is practiced. Driven-point wells are a convenient and affordable alternative, and in most instances they can be installed without the use of expensive or complicated equipment, which can make them an amazing project for the hands-on type who prefers the do-it-yourself approach.

Cattle skulls and scorpions scattered the ground while vultures circled overhead awaiting their imminent feast. In a futile last glance, he held himself up with shaking arms. Then his head cocked to the side like a confused dog -- could it really be? Practical Survivor. Water procurement during a survival situation could possibly be your number one concern.

Practical Survivor

The length of time you body will survive without proper hydration varies under different conditions. Increase in ambient temperature and activity will lessen your chances of survival. Under arid conditions the human body can succumb to dehydration within a few days. Water Procurement - Water Sources. Water is one of your most urgent needs in a survival situation.

Water Procurement - Water Sources

You can‘t live long without it, especially in hot areas where you lose water rapidly through perspiration. Even in cold areas, you need a minimum of 2 liters of water each day to maintain efficiency. More than three-fourths of your body is composed of fluids. Your body loses fluid as a result of heat, cold, stress, and exertion. To function effectively, you must replace the fluid your body loses. Water Sources Almost any environment has water present to some degree. Primitive Water Procurement. Water is the most important asset that our body needs to survive and one of the few things we can’t survive very long without! Shelter is usually your number one priority in any survival situation but water and shelter go hand in hand. You should place your shelter reasonably close to your water source. This will make life much easier because I guarantee you that you will grow tired very quickly of having to hike a mile to get a drink.

So be mindful of shelter placement first. There are so many methods for procuring water in the wilderness that I will only list a few here. You don’t want to mess around with water that has not been purified. Take the necessary precautions and purify your water before you drink it. Simple rules like drinking clear water or water that is moving quickly don’t always apply. These are the most common methods to purify water in survival or backpacking setting. Chef! Homemade MREs. For quite a while now, I've wanted to make up my own "MREs" for my Get Home Bag (GHB). I was recently out scouting some properties, and realized that my GHB only had some packs of tuna and some candy in them. I had broken my own Cardinal Rule - If you use it, replace it immediately. So, I went about making up some MRE packages. Now, these are not true MREs, in that their shelf life is less than half of the 5 years of a commercial MRE, but I figured they were WAY less expensive (remember this later on in the post...).

I assembled my "ingredients" based on "Best By" date, calories and protein content. The idea was to put long-life food together and vacuum seal it in a FoodSaver bag. Food Storage 101, What to Store. April 26, 2014, by Ken Jorgustin The first real tip here for ‘Food Storage 101′ is this: Store what you will eat! You can spend lots of time analyzing calories, nutritional content, and other factors, but I think the bottom line here is if you store what you eat on a daily basis, I think you’ll be just fine.

Here are more basic tips to get started with food storage: (UPDATED) Note: When I said “you’ll be just fine” regarding simply storing more foods that you already eat, let me emphasize that this philosophy will get you through all short term emergency situations, most medium term disasters, but will probably come up short in the event of a complete long-term collapse (but that’s not ‘Food Storage 101′) WISE Grab N' Go Bucket 60 Serving Food Supply.
