Interactive Fiction: Text Adventures

Between nostalgia for the past reborn on mobile systems and tools like Twine and Inform putting game development in the hands of anyone with a web browser, the time has never been better to find, play, or even develop an interactive fiction game. In this article, we're going to start with an introduction to the genre, examine the tools used to create these kinds of games, consider the best techniques used for their design, and list a few competitions you may like to check out. A very general definition of interactive fiction might consist of two main ideas. The first of which would be a parser, some code that accepts a type of input and acts on it. And the second would be a world model, some rules that define a simulation and the relationships between objects within it.

The Z-code format was the standard for all Infocom games during its run from 1979 to 1989. Do it. How to Host a Dungeon. About How to Host a Dungeon How to Host a Dungeon is a solo game of dungeon creation where you build a dungeon through its history from the dawn of time.

How to Host a Dungeon

In each age of How to Host a Dungeon, different forces drive how your dungeon evolves. In the Age of Civilization, Dwarves may build their first underground cities, or Dark Elves may build their slave pits deep beneath the surface. In the Age of Monsters, orcs, goblins, dragons, and beasts compete with one another for food and treasure while raiding the surface kingdoms and enduring invasions of adventurers. In the Age of Villainy, an arch villain seeks to conquer the world using the mature dungeon as its base of operations. Need More Tables (Or Other World Building Aids) for Solo/GM-less Gaming! Lately I've been thinking about doing some solo or all-player (no GM) rpg gaming and have been looking for things that will make this easier.

Need More Tables (Or Other World Building Aids) for Solo/GM-less Gaming!

This desire was spurred by finally getting around to reading through the Mythic Game Master Emulator (GME). I really liked what I've read and it seems like it might be really the only thing I'd need. I am looking forward to trying it out and seeing first hand how it all fits together. That said, reading over some of the examples and sessions I've found online I have a feeling there are going to be some things I might want spelled out for me. Mythic relies on players to make inferences about the game world through relatively small leaps in logic. Need More Tables (Or Other World Building Aids) for Solo/GM-less Gaming! The Alexandrian - Misc Creations

This has nothing to do with me being smarter than anybody else. It's just the result of a slow accumulation of random information and experience over the course of 20+ years of gaming. (Somehow I only just now realized that this means that there is significantly more time between when I started gaming and now, than there is between when I started gaming and the publication of OD&D in 1974. Crap, I'm old.) Towards that end, I've decided to start accumulating a variety of gaming lore.

30 Days of WorldBuilding

In October, 2004, I posted 30 days of world-building exercises to the NaNoWriMo discussion forums. These are short, 15-minute exercises that can help you make crucial decisions about your world, and what you want your story to say about it. These exercises have been edited for general use and re-posted here. Worldbuilding: Versailles 3D inspires. There’s so many cool things about this project, it’s hard to know where to start. Google have teamed up with Versailles in France and developed an interactive website worthy of the Sun King himself. What initially caught our interest was their great video of Versailles through the ages.

It shows a 3D tour of Versailles, from a ‘simple’ hunting lodge to France’s greatest palace. I visited the place a long time ago, but somehow this video made the place feel way more impressive. This video (and the website) is great for Game Masters that wish to put some more thought into their dungeon and map designs. Watch the video here and then feel free to delve into the site itself, here. The video shows you both the inside and outside progressions. Role-playing game terms. This includes both terms used within RPGs to describe in-game concepts and terms used to describe RPGs. Role-playing games also have specialized slang jargon associated with them. Terms used to play role-playing games[edit] Play-by-post role-playing game. An example of a play-by-post roleplaying game. A play-by-post game (PbP game, also called a sim or simming) is an online text-based role-playing game in which players (also called writers or simmers) interact with each other and a predefined environment via text.

It is a subset of the online role-playing community which caters to both gamers and creative writers. PbP games may be based on other role-playing games, non-game fiction including books, television and movies, or original settings. This activity is closely related to both interactive fiction and collaborative writing. History[edit] PbP has its origins on the large computer networks and bulletin board systems of major universities in the United States in the 1980s, and drew heavily upon the traditions of fanzines and off-line role-playing games.

Rules[edit] Bob punched Joe in the chest, knocking him over. Play-by-mail game. In all of these examples, player instructions can be either executed by a human moderator, a computer program, or a combination of the two. Atlas Games. [Imagine Chat] How to Play Dungeons and Dragons By Yourself - The Indie Dragon. D&D Party of One: Solo Adventuring (Part 1) When was the last time you played D&D and it was just one PC and one DM? I’d be amazed if anyone can say that they’ve done this since the release of 4e D&D. The changes that accompanied 4e make solo gaming almost too difficult to be practical. That’s not to say that it’s impossible, but it’s a lot more work for a DM to create and run a game with just one player in 4e then it ever was in previous editions. Soul Eater RPG.
