Gender Representation on Gender-Targeted Television Channels: A Comparison of Female- and Male-Targeted TV Channels in the Netherlands

In 2014, 49.5% of the Dutch population (N = 16,829,289) was male whereas 50.5% of the population was female (Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek 2014). The gender distribution on men’s and women’s channels was examined with a Chi square goodness of fit test whereby the societal percentage was used as the expected value. The results showed that women were significantly underrepresented on men’s channels compared to their presence in society.

Department of Gender and Women's Studies

The Berkeley Women’s Studies Program was founded in 1976, bringing scholars from many different disciplines together to introduce the subject of women into serious academic inquiry. Our courses have long considered the position of women throughout history, across the world, and in different economic, ethnic and racial groups. In the 1980s feminist scholars at Berkeley, as elsewhere, began to engage with the question of gender itself: although all societies make gender distinctions, how do they differ from one culture to another, how have definitions of male and female, and masculinity and femininity, evolved; how are they perpetuated; and how might they be redefined?

The Women’s Studies Program became a department in the Fall of 1991. Fraser NLR. Beyond Lean-In: For a Feminism of the 99% and a Militant International Strike on March 8. The massive women’s marches of January 21st may mark the beginning of a new wave of militant feminist struggle.

But what exactly will be its focus? In our view, it is not enough to oppose Trump and his aggressively misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic and racist policies; we also need to target the ongoing neoliberal attack on social provision and labor rights. While Trump’s blatant misogyny was the immediate trigger for the massive response on January 21st, the attack on women (and all working people) long predates his administration. Department of Gender and Women's Studies. Alternative media, self-representation and Arab-American women. Abstract Arab-American women often find themselves represented in the mainstream media as oppressed victims in need of saving, but what sometimes gets less attention are the ways in which Arab-American women themselves are adding to the media landscape, through poetry, film and other forms.

What I Know Now: Radio as a means of empowerment for women of lived prison experience Abstract Incarceration rates are increasing almost everywhere and, while women and girls make up only a small percentage of the overall prison population, there has been a significant increase in their representation – especially over the past 20 years (Carlton and Segrave, 2013).

What I Know Now: Radio as a means of empowerment for women of lived prison experience

Despite the fact that societies are locking women up at increasingly high rates, the fundamental understandings regarding prison reform are based on a male norm, and do not meet the needs of female offenders (Walmsley, 2016). Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick - Life - Life of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick. Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick (1950-2009) was a poet, artist, literary critic and teacher. She is perhaps best known as one of the originators of Queer Theory. Her work and her example continue to have a significant effect in shaping the lives and thought of many people. Sedgwick had little wanderlust, but she had a strong desire to find or create places that would give her both the freedom and the support that she needed. Each of the places that she lived had a strong and complex character for her — sometimes attractive, sometimes not — and each helped to shape her life there. This brief biography follows her from place to place.

The Extraordinary Political Power Of Moving ‘Beyond Monogamy’ The advance copy of professor/author Mimi Schippers’s latest book, Beyond Monogamy: Polyamory and the Future of Polyqueer Sexualities, arrived at my house exactly when I needed it: this summer as I was contemplating my own sexuality. I had called myself polyamorous for a few years, but was still working out everything that meant for my interests and relationships. Surprising as this may sound, it was actually thanks to a supportive and exciting relationship with the partner I describe as my boyfriend that I embraced my queerness. And with the help of Beyond Monogamy, I’ve begun to see my sexuality as radical beyond just the need for visibility for those who are bisexual, pansexual, omnisexual, or otherwise defy the notion that we must be attracted to just one gender. Schippers posits that all these sexualities could challenge multiple oppressive structures.
