This file is a very interesting one. You get a lot of uses from it and at the same time it exposes you to a lot of security threats. But before going into all that, here’s something for those who do not know what DNS is. DNS stands for Domain Name Service or Domain Name Server. As we know every server in the internet is identified by an IP Address.

The hosts file… So this hosts file is actually a plain text file that contains a local Domain name mapping table. Your hosts file will be located in the following directory if you are running Windows. C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\ My apologies to the folks running other operating systems…. Over the past few weeks I’ve run into a number of artists making awesome things with staples and decided to group them into on big post. All of the images above link to their sources, and there’s much more where these came from. For anyone visiting Colossal frequently you’ll notice a theme present in dozens of posts here is the idea of multiples, that is things built with thousands of other things, repetition, and process art, where the process of creating something is often more significant than what it produces. One man, 100,000 toothpicks, and 35 years: An incredible kinetic sculpture of San Francisco. Thirty five years ago I had yet to be born, but artist Scott Weaver had already begun work on this insanely complex kinetic sculpture, Rolling through the Bay, that he continues to modify and expand even today.

The elaborate sculpture is comprised of multiple “tours” that move pingpong balls through neighborhoods, historical locations, and iconic symbols of San Francisco, all recreated with a little glue, some toothpicks, and an incredible amount of ingenuity. He admits in the video that there are several toothpick sculptures even larger than his, but none has the unique kinetic components he’s constructed. Via his website Weaver estimates he’s spent over 3,000 hours on the project, and the toothpicks have been sourced from around the world:
