In Turkey, Secularism Is Much More Than a Word. ISTANBUL — In September 2011, Turkey’s then prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was greeted at Cairo airport by members of the Muslim Brotherhood who cheered him as his cortège moved along a road covered by billboards with his image.

In Turkey, Secularism Is Much More Than a Word

While there, Erdoğan gave a speech at the Cairo Opera House in which he talked about his vision of the Middle East. “Now, in this transitional phase in Egypt, as well as in what comes after it, I believe that the Egyptians will establish democracy very well, and they will see that a ‘secular state’ does not mean ‘an irreligious state,’” he said during an interview with Mona El-Shazly on Dream TV. “Rather it means respect for all the religions and giving all individuals the freedom to practice religion as they please.” At the time Erdoğan’s words sent shockwaves among Muslim Brotherhood figures who were opposed to the separation of state and religion. Five years on, Erdoğan’s words have gathered new significance.

Secularism is, after all, firstly a word. We need a debate on secularism in Turkey - NURAY MERT. Parliament Speaker İsmail Kahraman sparked controversy last week after suggesting that secularism should not be included in Turkey’s new constitution, as this is a Muslim country.

We need a debate on secularism in Turkey - NURAY MERT

Both the president and the prime minister quickly denounced his remarks as his “personal views,” ensuring that no debate on secularism takes place. But in fact there is a debate on secularism going on in Turkey, and I wish the ruling party would not shy away from an open and honest debate on this controversial issue. From the very beginning of the republican regime, there has always been controversy on the principle of secularism, even after religious conservatives were suppressed and excluded from politics in the early stages of republican rule.

Tight security marks Turkish May Day rallies. Israel, Turkey, Russia and Egypt. Turkish sources assert that Turkish-Israeli governmental relations are about to come out of the deep freeze.

Israel, Turkey, Russia and Egypt

But this is a reflection of Turkey's regional unpopularity and glides over Turkish demands for Israel to end the blockade of Gaza. To meet Turkey's condition, Israel would have to abandon the security arrangement it shares with Egypt -- which has increased Israel's security and has begun to pay regional dividends. To restore full relations between Israel and Turkey would irritate Russia, with which Israel has good trade and political relations, and a respectful series of understandings regarding Syria.

Israel's relations with the Kurds are also at issue here. In 2011, however, the UN Palmer Commission Report found the blockade of Gaza -- jointly administered with Egypt -- to be legal, and said Israel owed Turkey neither an apology nor compensation. Turkey’s President Recep Erdogan spent three days in Washington from March 30-April 1, attending the fourth Nuclear Security Summit, hosted by President Barack Obama.

The Erdogan Visit to Washington: Tough Love

The visit offered the Turkish leader an opportunity to meet, on the sidelines, with senior Obama Administration officials, at a moment when US-Turkish relations are not exactly in fine shape. The biggest issue in dispute between Ankara and Washington is the status of Syrian Kurds from the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) and its People’s Protection Units (YPG). The Pentagon has allied with the YPG in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIL) in northern Syria, providing weapons, air support and even embedding US Special Forces in the YPG fighting units. In the battle for Kobani last year, US combat advisers, US air support and weapons all played a valuable role in the hard-fought battle that was an early turning point in the fight to contain ISIL’s expansion.

The issue is not academic.

Recently, a group of members of the Russian Duma called for the renunciation of the so-called 1921 Treaty of Brotherhood between Russia and Turkey. This move follows a series of recent confrontations between Turkey and Russia along the old fault lines of the Ottoman and Russian Empires. While the Duma is likely to reject the request to renounce the treaty, this episode offers an insight into the prevalent thinking about Turkey among many of Russia's political elite. Underneath the geo-political tensions in the Middle East, the South Caucasus, and the Balkans simmers a tension between Russia and Turkey going back centuries.

A bomb-disposal expert at the site of twin explosions near Ankara's train station last October (AFP) ISTANBUL, Turkey - When 23-year-old Mehmet Ozturk turned the corner of Balo Sokak on 19 March and walked onto Istiklal Caddesi, the busiest street here in the capital, he was unknown to all, save the few specialists who study militant groups in Turkey. After he detonated the explosive vest that was concealed under his clothing, killing both himself and four foreign tourists, his name was splashed on every newspaper. In scale, it may have been smaller than other recent attacks in Ankara, but here was an attack on Istiklal Street itself, one of the most prominent symbols of modern Turkish life.

The country was shocked. The Kobane connection: IS 'tea house cell' blamed for Turkish bombing spree. “In Turchia 2,5 milioni di rifugiati. Nell’Unione solo poche gocce” Turkish officials: Europe wanted to export extremists to Syria. Turkish officials have accused European governments of attempting to export their Islamic extremist problem to Syria, saying the EU has failed to secure its own borders or abide by pledges to share intelligence and cooperate in fighting the jihadist threat. The failures were outlined by Turkish officials to the Guardian through several documented instances of foreign fighters leaving Europe while travelling on passports registered on Interpol watchlists, arriving from European airports with luggage containing weapons and ammunition, and being freed after being deported from Turkey despite warnings that they have links to foreign fighter networks. “We were suspicious that the reason they want these people to come is because they don’t want them in their own countries,” a senior Turkish security official told the Guardian.

Kurdish group claims responsibility for Ankara bombing. A Kurdish militant group with ties to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) on Thursday claimed the deadly suicide car bomb attack that killed 35 people in Ankara last weekend. "On the evening of March 13, a suicide attack was carried out... in the streets of the capital of the fascist Turkish republic. We claim this attack," the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK) said in a statement on its website. The group said it was a response to security operations carried out by Turkish forces in the Kurdish-dominated southeast of the country since the collapse of a ceasefire last year. Mitigating US-Turkish Disagreement over the PYD.

Until US emissary McGurk’s January 30 visit with the PYD leadership and the February 17 bombing, the Turkish government had implicitly accepted the US distinction between the PYD and the PKK, with one key exception: the PYD’s presence in northern Aleppo. In Iraq, Turkish warplanes have been bombing PKK targets since late July. In Syria, however, Ankara had indicated that it would only strike PYD targets if fired upon or if the PYD threatened Turkish border towns. Turkey had been shelling the PYD in northwestern Syria in response to PYD threats and has stepped up its offensive since the February 17 bombing. – mcc43

Some noted that the demand to remove the blockade of Gaza would remain a key condition and that no agreement with Israel would be signed if this issue is not resolved. Israel, however, has no intention of lifting the Gaza blockade. A senior official in Jerusalem said earlier this week that Israel was interested in finding ways of easing the blockade which could be credited to Turkish efforts. read more: – mcc43
