Guardian open journalism: Three Little Pigs advert - the Guardian. Why Schools Must Teach Social Networking. Following my response to Sir Michael Wilshaw’s call to ban mobile phones from the classroom, further questions need to be asked about the direction we are taking regarding the way our students communicate and the means they use to do so. Drawing from previous posts and subsequent comments, I’ll set out below why I think schools need to deal with the real reason why smartphones have become ubiquitous in our classrooms: social networking. The use of social networking is increasing in all areas of society but, although students have been active in social networking for almost a decade now, during this time, schools and teachers have largely ignored their students’ clear desire for peer interaction and communication outside the classroom.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this alienation has resulted in what many teachers describe as sporadic and unspectacular engagement with technology, thus proving in the eyes of many sceptics that social networking is unfit for academic purposes. In the wake of the IPO of social-networking giant Facebook, Microsoft has quietly launched So.cl, its own social networking foray. However, So.cl isn't designed to be a Facebook challenger. The project, the details of which leaked out last year , is designed to give students the ability to network with their peers to share information. "FUSE Labs' So.cl project is now accepting all users interested in joining the site," a Microsoft representative told CNET. "So.cl is an experimental research project focused on the future of social experiences and learning, especially among younger people.

" "So.cl (pronounced 'social') combines search and social networking for the purpose of learning and is the latest experiment from FUSE Labs," Microsoft said in a description of the app. Much like Facebook's share or recommend buttons, So.cl has a "bookmarklet" feature that adds a "Share on So.cl" button to users' bookmarks toolbars, allowing them to share interesting Web sites with other So.cl users. Social Network Rumors Fly This Week. A panicky rumor about Facebook and phone lists has been propagating through the social network and the media. The messages claim that your contact lists and phone numbers are being collated and made available to Facebook and the public. The truth lies elsewhere. When you add a smart phone app for your social network, you are prompted whether or not to add your contact list to your social network.

Since few people read their user agreements all the way through (or even at all), most people missed the explanation. And as a result a feature that’s actually very helpful (having all your contacts in one place with Facebook contact information added for you) looks like something that could be a privacy violation. Fortunately there are simple ways to back out of this arrangement. Techcrunch has the link to undo the imported contact phone numbers. Dan Tynan at ITWorld has a strong opinion about sharing phone numbers in social networks. UNTHINK to Facebook and Google- It's FU time. Online Database of Social Media Policies.
