The Uniquely Talented and Intelligent Octopus

Octopus ancestors are, perhaps, the first intelligent beings on Earth. Recent research is beginning to describe their very unusual talents, behavior and brain, as well as their unique genetic makeup. The fact that such an intelligent creature has no bones or spine has upended theories of animal intelligence. This post will describe recent research about their unique brain and its similarities and differences from humans. It shows a unique genetic expansion of genes that, somewhat differently, built the human brain. Millipede Genitals, Now in Glorious 3-D! It’s blue, its name is “avatar,” and it’s virtual.

It’s not easy to get owls to mug for the camera.

Who's Who

Even in captivity the birds remain aloof, unruffled by the flash and unmoved by attempts to bribe them. Photographer Brad Wilson learned that lesson firsthand after trying to win over owls from the World Bird Sanctuary in St. Louis and The Wildlife Center near Española, New Mexico. Beetle. The word "coleoptera" is from the Greek κολεός, koleos, meaning "sheath"; and πτερόν, pteron, meaning "wing", thus "sheathed wing", because most beetles have two pairs of wings, the front pair, the "elytra", being hardened and thickened into a shell-like protection for the rear pair and the beetle's abdomen.

23 pollinating species in Britain have gone extinct over the last 150 years

Contrary to the belief that local bees and wasps only began to go extinct after World War II, new evidence is showing that the large-scale changes in agricultural practices that began shortly after the First World War were the catalyst for these insects’ demise. Since 1850, 23 pollinator species have gone extinct, with the first massive disappearance occurring in the early 1920s. This rapid decline could have severe consequences for the future of food security across the U.K. Actualité > Un comportement animal étonnant : des loups font la paix avec des singes. Chimpanzee Gives Jane Goodall The Best Hug Ever — And The Internet Swoons As One

The chimpanzee’s name is Wounda. When she was found, the chimp was sick — underweight, weak, and near death, Animal Planet reported. The staff at the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center in the Congo took her in and cared for her. The chimpanzee did well and recovered, but that meant she had to go back into the wild, namely the protected lands on Tchindzoulou Island. This is one of three special islands developed by Goodall which offer both wild sanctuary to chimpanzees, but allow them access to continued care by staff.

Some people think crows are a bad omen, associating the dark birds with their long-held reputation of thievery. But an 8 year-old girl in Seattle has been cultivating a relationship with local crows for years, and she has some unconventionally delightful goods to show for it.

Gabi Mann has been feeding crows in her neighborhood bits of food since she was four, and as her feedings became more regular, an interesting exchange began to take place. In return for their daily “meal” and water, the crows began sporadically gifting Gabi with bits and baubles. See Gabi’s collection of treasures bestowed by the birds after the jump.
