An unusual study of traders’ spit may offer a taste of the future in how we understand what drives markets -- and why they aren’t as stable and efficient as we might hope. Several years ago, two neuroscientists undertook an experiment on the trading floor of a major investment bank in London.

Over eight consecutive business days, at both 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., John Coates and Joe Herbert took samples of saliva from the mouths of 17 traders. With these samples, taken before and after the bulk of the day’s trading activity, they measured the rising and falling levels of a number of steroid hormones, including testosterone, adrenaline and cortisol.

The data revealed physiological changes not evident to the eye. To begin with, Coates and Herbert found that when traders did well and made money, they didn’t do it solely through cleverness and cerebral dexterity. This isn’t actually surprising. Something Unexpected The London experiments, though, also showed something unexpected. Giddy Energy. Want a 9% Raise? Hit the Gym. By Jack Hough Stagnant wages and shaky investment markets are enough to make workers want to hit the gym to forget about their money troubles. They might just find that the treadmill offers better financial returns than Wall Street. Workers who exercise regularly earn 9% higher pay on average than those who don’t, according to a study published in the June issue of the Journal of Labor Research. Past studies have linked exercise with higher earnings, but the direction of cause and effect wasn’t clear.

In an effort to cut through the confusion, Vasilios Kosteas of Cleveland State University, the study’s author, used a statistical technique called propensity-score matching. By comparing subjects with similar scores, only some of whom exercise, Mr. Exercise has been shown in other studies to boost mental function and energy levels and improve mood. If it’s any motivation for workers, the study suggests time at the gym pays for itself, and then some. Mr. 3 Postures to Boost Productivity Now. Whether you're an entrepreneur on a fast-paced schedule or a business leader in a long meeting, powerful postures can help boost your productivity at work. "Posture affects how we think," says Sian Beilock, cognitive psychologist and author of Choke: What the Secrets of the Brain Reveal About Getting it Right When You Have To (Free Press, 2010).

"One of the ways we shape our thoughts is through our physical movements. " Beilock is referring to a theory called "embodied cognition," which says that your brain looks to your face and body to understand how you feel. Are you energetic? "Productivity is really about telling your brain: 'I'm in charge, I feel good, go,'" says Dana Carney, cognitive psychologist and assistant professor at the Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley. Carney's research has shown that expansive body postures, known as "power poses," can put us in a productive state of mind. 1) Put your hands on your head with your elbows out.

A friend of mine resigned his long-time bank management job this week to take early retirement.

I learned about it on Facebook. As I began reading his announcement, I fully expected it to be an animated recounting of all the new hobbies he planned to pursue and exotic trips he intended to take. But it quickly became clear that this was no ordinary farewell note. He was truly upset about ending his career prematurely and wanted everyone close to him to understand why. It was painful to discover that my former colleague had grown profoundly disheartened by the way his organization’s leadership had been treating him. With over two decades of service behind him, he called it quits simply because he couldn’t take it anymore. “I felt like no one cared about me as a person there, and finally decided to extricate myself from the grind. “You may not be able to retire quite yet like me, but please do yourself a favor and look for something more satisfying.

With this design, the handles are locked in at 45 degree angles. The PVC for the handles are 7" long, making the exposed PVC about 5 1/2", with foam piping insulation cut to fit. The PVC connecting all of the components of the handles are each 1 3/4" long so that the ends of the elbows, tees, and caps will abutt each other. All components shown above are glued together. Artists I Like. Study: The longer you sit, the shorter your life. By Amanda Gardner, HealthDay The more Americans engage in one of their favorite pastimes — sitting around — the shorter their average life span, a new study suggests. The effect remained even after researchers factored out obesity or the level of daily physical activity people were engaged in, according to a study of more than 120,000 American adults. It's just one more reason to "get up and walk," said Dr. Jay Brooks, chairman of hematology/oncology at Ochsner Health System in Baton Rouge "The message here is like everything in your life. People need to recognize that the things you do every day have consequences. The salutary effect of exercise on being overweight or obese, rates of which are at an all-time high, have been well documented. But according to background information in the study, which is published online July 22 in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the effects of sitting per se are less well-studied.

Participants were followed for 14 years, from 1993 to 2006.
