Anatomical Venus: The gory idealized beauty of wax medical models

Late 18th century The importance of anatomical models cannot be overstated in the education of medical professionals, but these learning tools have not always been so… clinical. Behold, the “Anatomical Venus,” idealized female forms first popularized in 18th century Europe, intended for the education of both medical students and a curious public (men and women were most often segregated for viewings). The figures were usually made of wax, which is malleable and conducive to bright colors and the “ladies” were often adorned with jewelry, ribbons and elaborate makeup. Disturbingly, some of models look dead, while others are depicted as if they were flayed alive—some even appear to express a level of eroticism. The detail and care in craftsmanship only ups the uncanny factor.

Alp (folklore) „Nachtmahr“ (“Night-mare”), by Johann Heinrich Füssli (1802), depicts an alp sitting on the sleeper's chest, with a mara staring through the background.

Alp (folklore)

An alp is a nightmare creature originating in German folklore. Sexual attacks by the alp are rare.[3] The alp is often associated with vampires because it will drink blood from the nipples of men and young children,[4] though women are the preferred victim of the invariably male alp, for it favors the taste of breast milk. Gary Gilmore. Gary Mark Gilmore (December 4, 1940 – January 17, 1977) was an American criminal who gained international notoriety for demanding the execution of his death sentence for two murders he committed in Utah.

Gary Gilmore

After the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a new series of death penalty statutes in the 1976 decision Gregg v. Georgia, he became the first person executed in the United States in ten years.[1] These new statutes avoided the problems under the 1972 decision in Furman v. Georgia that had led earlier death penalty statutes to be deemed as "cruel and unusual", and therefore unconstitutional, resulting in all states being ordered to commute death sentences to life imprisonment.

Joel-Peter Witkin.

David Nebreda. Why is the average pop song only 3 minutes long?

" In it, the piano man warbles about the perils of the music industry, and having to limit himself to writing radio-friendly tracks. "It was a beautiful song/But it ran too long/If you're gonna have a hit/You gotta make it fit/So they cut it down to 3:05. " It's a deft set of lyrics that perfectly sums up the music world's short attention span. In the pop industry, most radio hits typically can't be longer than three to four minutes. Case in point, the top three songs currently on the Billboard Hot 100. What makes three the magic number? As it turns out, average hit song length has more to do with historical limitation than an audience's focus level. See also: 15 visually stunning album covers of 2014.

Rat King - Weird Encyclopedia. March 2013. If ever there was a film title destined to provoke immediate expressions of hilarity and disbelief from the general public, and a corresponding instant viewing/purchase decision from the kind of special cases I’d imagine/hope peruse this blog, ‘Death Bed: The Bed That Eats’ would surely be it.* Once the initial chuckles have faded though, and the DVD has been obtained, I think the perfect way to experience ‘Death Bed’ would be to dive in blind, with zero prior knowledge.

Such an approach would help to maximise the kind of holy mystery that movies like this thrive upon, and would allow the realisation to dawn slowly, alongside the events on-screen: what we are seeing here is not some ill-conceived, ‘last idea left in the bucket’ laff-fest, but actually one of the most challenging, original and uniquely strange independent horror films ever produced in the USA.
