Andy Warhol, nascido Andrej Varhola, Jr. (Pittsburgh, 6 de agosto de 1928 — Nova Iorque, 22 de fevereiro de 1987), foi um empresário, pintor e cineasta norte-americano, bem como uma figura maior do movimento de pop art. Biografia[editar | editar código-fonte] Aos 17 anos, em 1945, entrou no Instituto de Tecnologia de Carnegie, em Pittsburgh, hoje Universidade Carnegie Mellon e se graduou em design. Logo após mudou para Nova York e começou a trabalhar como ilustrador de importantes revistas, como Vogue, Harper's Bazaar e The New Yorker, além de fazer anúncios publicitários e displays para vitrines de lojas.

Unless you pay close attention to Contemporary Asian Art you won't recognize the names of most of the artists included in the sale, such as Wang Yidong, Liao Chi Ch'un or Kim Dong Yoo. There is, however, one name in the auction catalog very familiar to Westerners: Andy Warhol. Six of the ten Warhol prints of Chairman Mao offered by Christie's Hong Kong Christie's is offering the suite of 10 silkscreen prints by Warhol as a single auction lot, in hopes of demonstrating a "dialogue" between Asian artists and Warhol. -artnet Auctions announces an important offering of Andy Warhol’s original, complete portfolio of 10 Mao color screen prints from 1972. Close analysis of past auction results reveals that the majority of Mao suites have been broken up, which adds to the rarity of this exquisite set. These works are coming to auction on the heels of Phillips de Pury’s successful auction in April, which realized USD 938,500. In the aftermath of President Richard Nixon's 1972 visit to China, and its subsequent buzz in the press, Warhol created a series of prints around the now immortalized image of the Chinese leader, Mao Zedong.

Inspired by a parallel between Communist propaganda and American media, as well as the cult-like followings of Mao in the East and movie stars in the West, Warhol executed his Mao portrait series echoing his portraits of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley. Warhol's Mao series was a response to US president Richard Nixon's visit to China in 1972. He transformed the official portrait of the leader, in this case using the red and yellow colour scheme of the Cultural Revolution.

It was last sold at auction in June 2000 for £421,500. The auction at Sotheby's in London also included the sale of Gerhard Richter's 1994 work Wand (Wall) for £17.4 million. Lucian Freud's Head on a Green Sofa was also sold for £2.9 million. The painting of society figure Belinda 'Bindy', Lady Lambton was created after Freud exchanged his fine, sable brushes for larger hogs' hair brushes and taught himself to work standing up.
