The delightful squash is nomadic, prolific, adaptive and lush – and then it carks it

I’ve been rolling this word around my tongue and repeating it under my breath like a spell, a prayer for rain, an expression of gratitude to the Earth for producing it. The word askutasquash is from Narragansett, a Native American language from which the word squash derives. It translates to “a green thing eaten raw or uncooked”. What a beautiful word it is too. This genus of cucurbita includes many domesticated, cultivated species including C. moschata (crookneck pumpkin), C. pepo (field pumpkin) and C. ficiofolia (fig leaf gourd). So what is the difference between a squash and a pumpkin? As the origin of the name suggests, we often think of squash as a summer vegetable eaten soft-skinned, young and tender. The first known domestication of squash was in Mesoamerica, before maize and legumes, at least 8,000 years ago. I love growing them. I can relate to them totally. I can’t choose my favourite squash. How to treat a fungal nail infection. Nail fungus is never an easy subject to broach.

How to treat a fungal nail infection

It can be very limiting for sufferers as it can cause embarrassment and discomfort. Noticeable symptoms include yellow or brown discolouration of the nail that will not go away on its own, while crumbly nails can break off. A musty smell can occur, too. If the infection spreads to the area between toes, it is commonly called athlete’s foot, a condition that is contagious and easily spread by walking barefoot. There are simple precautions you can take to prevent getting an infection or passing one on. Nail fungus is usually easiest to treat when it hasn’t gone to the root of the nail. Emma McConnachie, College of Podiatry Lead Podiatrist, was speaking to Joti Birdi.

Native Americans will take centre stage in the Mayflower celebrations. In 1620 the Mayflower sailed from Plymouth for the New World with 102 pilgrims.

Four centuries on, a staggering 30 million Americans can trace their ancestry to them. During 2020, Mayflower 400 will be a year-long arts festival commemorating the pilgrims’ historic journey, their arrival and impact on Native Americans. The programme is centred on Plymouth, but 12 other partner towns and villages, including in the US and the Netherlands, will also take part – such as Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, birthplace of pilgrim elder William Brewster, and Harwich, home to the ship’s captain. So off I went on Wednesday to the historic port city for the launch of the celebrations, which began with a terrific display of 30 light commissions that ends this evening.

Native Americans will be a central theme of Mayflower 400, including This Land at the Theatre Royal, and Settlement, an installation in Plymouth’s Central Park on the effects of colonialism. America is not the land of the free but one of monopolies so predatory they imperil the nation. Tomorrow, President Trump arrives in London for the annual Nato summit.

Despite the boasting and the trappings of superpower status, he is an emissary from a country whose economy and society are in increasing difficulty, and whose global leadership is under challenge not just from the usual suspect, China, but from Europe. With the unerring capacity to be wrong that defines the Brexit right, Britain is about to decouple itself from a continental economy beginning to get things right, and hook up with one that is palpably beginning to fail. This is not the conventional wisdom. The EU is sclerotic, undynamic, stifled by quasi-socialist red tape, and hostile to insurgent startups. It is so degenerate it cannot even defend itself – as Trump will undoubtedly remind its leaders over the next two days. Except the latest research demonstrates the reverse is true. Philippon’s answer is simple. This monopolising process gums up everything.

But why has this happened now? Big Brother is watching: Chinese city with 2.6m cameras is world's most heavily surveilled. Qiu Rui, a policeman in Chongqing, was on duty this summer when he received an alert from a facial recognition system at a local square.

There was a high probability a man caught on camera was a suspect in a 2002 murder case, the system told him. The city’s surveillance system scans facial features of people on the streets from frames of video footage in real time, creating a virtual map of the face. It can then match this information against scanned faces of suspects in a police database.
