6 Photographers Asked to Shoot Portraits of 1 Man... With a Twist

They enlisted the help of 6 photographers and asked them each to independently shoot portraits of a man named Michael. Gary Schneider The word intimate is often overused in photography, but there really isn’t any other way to describe Gary Schneider’s on-again, off-again series “Heads.”

Lying down on mats, cushions, and black velvet underneath Schneider’s large-format camera, the subjects are then “exposed” over eight minutes by a tiny light Schneider uses to explore around their heads. Schneider, who grew up in South Africa and moved to New York for graduate school, began the series in 1988. At first, he shot in black and white and took two portraits that lasted roughly half an hour each, but when he started working on the series again a few years later, he switched to color film and “a tighter script.”

They meet once a year during the last weekend in June to discuss the organization’s affairs. One day of the meeting is set aside for looking at and voting on potential new members' portfolios. Successful applicants will be invited to become a "Nominee Member", a category of membership, which presents an opportunity for Magnum and the individual to get to know each other. At this stage there are no binding commitments on either side. Magnum is only considering digital submissions at this point.
