We recently learned that Carrie Brownstein — of Portlandia , but more importantly, Sleater-Kinney/Wild Flag fame — has signed a deal with Riverhead Books and is working on a memoir. We’re psyched, of course, and ready for a hilarious take on the ’90s riot grrrl scene and its transition into alt rock and indie punk. But the news also got us thinking about some of our favorite existing music memoirs, written by everyone from Throwing Muses frontwoman Kristin Hersh to folk superhuman Woody Guthrie (but we’re leaving out Just Kids , because we’ve talked about it so much here that we assume you’ve already read it).

The Twilight Zone was such a groundbreaking series that it influenced our popular culture to a level many of us don’t even realize. From Rod Serling’s silky and smoke-filled introductions, to the inevitable twist ending, the Twilight Zone’s black and white years were doubtless its best. While many of the twists have become so well known in the ensuing years as to lost much of their sting, if you can imagine watching these broadcasts in the 60s on an old black and white set, you might just get a feel for how revolutionary it was. Bottle Flower series by Makoto Azuma
This is our 2nd environment-related post to commemorate Earth Day. Floral artist Makoto Azuma has been challenging our relationship with plants for quite some time now. It’s not a commonly discussed topic, especially amongst floral designers who make their living by often ending the life of plants in order to make a pretty display. But Azuma, whether he is creating an installation of flowers to be stomped on during a performance, or removing an age-old bonsai from its soil and hanging it in mid-air , approaches the subject matter head on. In his latest series Bottle Flower , which he has been releasing over the last few days, Azuma creates bold yet somewhat disturbing pieces comprised of flowers stuffed into glass bottles like sardines and then filled with water. The flowers, which are shockingly beautiful but also clearly dead, invoke images of laboratory experiments in which body parts are preserved in some sort of embalming fluid.UFO
