Simon Preston Gallery is delighted to present a solo exhibition by Amie Siegel, her first at the gallery, from Sunday 8 September until Sunday 6 October, 2013. Known for an expansive body of work ranging from photographs, sound, video, installations and feature films, Siegel will premiere a multi-part project that tracks backwards the origins and economic movements of cultural objects. Characteristic of the artist’s layered approach, the work self-reflexively takes on the behaviors of the system it describes.
The constellation of works circles around the global trade in furniture from the Indian city of Chandigarh. Conceived in the 1950s by architects Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, Chandigarh’s controversial modernist architecture includes original pieces of furniture—tables, chairs, settees, desks—created specifically for the building’s interiors. Recently these pieces have appeared at auction houses around the world, commanding record prices.

Charles Saatchi. Exposición: “Sincronizando hilos y rizomas”, de Chiharu Shiota. Casa Asia presenta la primera exposición de Chiharu Shiota (Osaka, 1972) en Barcelona, con una propuesta consistente en varias instalaciones, dibujos y videos, que se integran en un único proyecto desplegado en su sede. Las instalaciones de Shiota producen espacios propios, donde se hacen visibles centenares de hilos invisibles que nos unen a las cosas. En estos escenarios domésticos que propone, los hilos se convierten a su vez en puentes entre un vestido de novia y el sujeto ausente, un piano, maletas y un espejo.
En su obra, estos hilos son venas por las que circulan lágrimas, el miedo al abismo, la vida y la muerte; hilos conductores de relatos particulares y universales, entremezclándose como las raíces invertidas de un árbol, al igual que un rizoma a través de múltiples ramificaciones que entorpecen la relación entre yo y el mundo. In turn the hammer hits... the infallible rhythm announcing true creation; it is Simon Hantaï.” Andre Breton, 1953 Born in Hungary, Simon Hantaï moved to France in 1949 and quickly became known throughout Europe for his large, abstract canvasses of profound, saturated color. Motivated by Jackson Pollock’s gestural abstractions, Hantaï strove to produce a new method of painting that would redefine the role of the artist and restructure the picture plane. Ryan reminds us of everything that never was and everything that could have been.
