The cities experiencing the strongest shaking — IX (Ruinous) on the Mercalli intensity scale — were Talcahuano , Arauco , Lota , Chiguayante , Cañete , Talca , Concepción , and San Antonio . The earthquake was felt in the capital Santiago at Mercalli intensity scale VIII (Destructive).
