The Robot Car of Tomorrow May Just Be Programmed to Hit You

DOT Suppose that an autonomous car is faced with a terrible decision to crash into one of two objects. It could swerve to the left and hit a Volvo sport utility vehicle (SUV), or it could swerve to the right and hit a Mini Cooper. If you were programming the car to minimize harm to others–a sensible goal–which way would you instruct it go in this scenario? As a matter of physics, you should choose a collision with a heavier vehicle that can better absorb the impact of a crash, which means programming the car to crash into the Volvo.

But physics isn’t the only thing that matters here. Even if the harm is unintended, some crash-optimization algorithms for robot cars would seem to require the deliberate and systematic discrimination of, say, large vehicles to collide into. The University of Cambridge has posted a video showing how and explaining why it uses mice to test cancer drugs for humans.

Inside the animal lab where cancer cures are tested

Cambridge used the video as an opportunity to be frank about its use of mice -- defending the necessity of it, but also focussing on animal welfare and alternatives the university is pursuing to try and reduce and replace animal tests. "As part of our commitment to openness, in our new film, we look inside one of our facilities, where mice are helping our scientists understand how cancers develop," explains the university in a blog post.

The video was released to coincide with World Day for Animals in Laboratories (held on 24 April) and offers a rare insight into a world usually closed to the public. Animal rights activists took to the streets of Cambridge this weekend to protest against experiments taking place at the university and at AstraZeneca's new headquarters on the biomedical campus. Maris' presentation to a packed house of 1,500 entrepreneurs focused primarily on the future and the evolution of the products we use everyday. Prefacing the keynote he hypothesized that really great products and services will eventually become pervasive in society and basically free. VVD: 'Haal Google Campus naar Groningen' - iPad. Official Google Blog: Rethinking office space. Not the sexiest title for a blog post, I know.

Official Google Blog: Rethinking office space

But as we’ve inhabited a variety of workplaces—including a garage in Menlo Park, a farmhouse in Denmark and an entire New York city block—we’ve learned something about what makes an office space great. And we’re excited to put that into practice, starting here at our home in Mountain View. Today we’re submitting a plan to redevelop four sites—places where we already have offices but hope to significantly increase our square footage—to the Mountain View City Council.

It's the first time we'll design and build offices from scratch and we hope these plans by Bjarke Ingels at BIG and Thomas Heatherwick at Heatherwick Studio will lead to a better way of working. Google Ventures. 10,000 Year Clock

It's a special Clock, designed to be a symbol, an icon for long-term thinking. It's of monumental scale inside a mountain in West Texas. The father of the Clock is Danny Hillis. He's been thinking about and working on the Clock since 1989. He wanted to build a Clock that ticks once a year, where the century hand advances once every 100 years, and the cuckoo comes out on the millennium. Goed nieuws: de wereld bestaat niet - Filosofie. Karl Popper, the enemy of certainty, part 1: a rejection of empiricism. You might ask why we should care what an Austrian philosopher of science who has been dead for 18 years thought about the nature of scientific inquiry.

Yet much of what Karl Popper contributed to the philosophy of science has now passed into mainstream thought, into the currency of that nebulous, tricky ontology known as "common sense". In the case of philosophers such as Popper, their work is, in a sense, too recent to be able to evaluate with the level of hindsight that we might apply to more distant thinkers, such as David Hume, and yet it is worth attempting to unpack. Born in 1902, in Vienna, the young Popper demonstrated a broad range of interests (music was a dominant passion) and an inquiring mind: he entered into the intellectual hotbed of Austrian culture, attending lectures by Einstein, investigating the psychotherapeutic theories of Freud and Adler, and becoming a Marxist.

The search for truth was, Popper considered, the strongest motivation for scientific discovery. History of Philosophy without any gaps.
