Designworld. The international thematic review of contemporary design, DesignWorld, illuminates the meanings of design on societal, ecological and individual levels. The exhibition follows on from the ‘Safe – Design takes on Risk’ exhibition organised at the New York MoMA in 2005, addressing issues that are always topical. Design is viewed from the premise of the basic needs of man and society, as well as reflecting on the various possible ways in which design can make an impact in a changing world. The exhibition has a number of subthemes, which help to reveal both the basic premises of design and wider concepts, such as ecology and responsible design. The exhibition consists of prototypes, concepts, project presentations and idea models, in addition to objects in production. The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive ancillary programme, which examines the various impacts and meanings of design and also encourages the general public to take part in the debate.

Jurgen Bey deel 1. The Machine – Designing a new industrial revolution | z33. Exhibition venue: C-mine (Genk) The industrial revolution was a revolution for engineers. Now designers are at the forefront of a new revolution. They are part of networks that enable them to develop new materials and systems, build their own machines, and seek new tools for production and distribution. These developments offer an alternative to mass production and open paths to a new economy and society. New machines impact society. The Machine is an interactive exhibition, accompanied by an extensive program for a diverse audience. Participating designers of the exhibition are: Juan Montero Valdes (ES/GB), Mischer’Traxler (AT), Tal Erez (IL), Thomas Vailly (FR), Thomas Maincent (FR), Studio Homunculus (NL), Unfold (BE), Eugenia Morpurgo (IT), Maya Ben David (IL), Jon Stam (CA/NL), Itay Ohaly (IL), Christian Fiebig (DE), The Creative Factory (FR/IL), Formafantasma (IT/NL), Sofie Lachaert (BE).

Freak Show: Strategies for (Dis)engagement in Design is a selling exhibition of objects by a very special selection of international designers that think differently and who challenge the system. They are the “freaks” that are showing us that design is no longer what we thought it was.

Our survival depends upon change, and this is only possible through individuals that are able to think and act beyond social, theoretical and methodical norms. A special catalogue raisonée in a limited edition of 300 numbered copies will be published shortly after the opening. Denn unser aller Überleben hängt vom Wandel ab.

Ultrabody. [DESIGN]CRISIS. New energy in design and art. From October 29 2011 until February 26 2012 Photo: Lotte Stekelenburg New Energy in Design and Art is an exhibition about energy and the search for a new balance in our living environment. Artists, designers and progressive thinkers present their (alternative) ideas about our consumption of energy. The exhibition features surprising, strange and sometimes unimaginable objects and sculptures that deal with the theme of sustainable progress. New Energy in Design and Art demonstrates how we can think differently about the consumption of energy.

The artists and designers in this exhibition (including Atelier NL, the duo Auger-Loizeau, Joris Laarman, Philippe Rahm, Bertjan Pot, Michiel van Bakel, John Körmeling, Oskar de Kiefte, Eric Klarenbeek, Mike Thompson, Panamarenko, Jurgen Bey, mischer'traxler, Gerrit van Bakel, Dunne & Raby, Jeroen Verhoeven, Zoe Papadopoulou, Design Drift and Theo Jansen) no longer think in terms of utopian ideas but show us pure reality. Design in Boijmans. Design and the Elastic Mind. Reviews: Design and the Elastic Mind | Features. In the past few decades, individuals have experienced dramatic changes in some of the most established dimensions of human life: time, space, matter, and individuality.

Working across several time zones, traveling with relative ease between satellite maps and nanoscale images, gleefully drowning in information, acting fast in order to preserve some slow downtime, people cope daily with dozens of changes in scale. Minds adapt and acquire enough elasticity to be able to synthesize such abundance. One of design's most fundamental tasks is to stand between revolutions and life, and to help people deal with change.

Designers have coped with these displacements by contributing thoughtful concepts that can provide guidance and ease as science and technology evolve. The evolution of crafts As a component of The Year of Doing, the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen is organizing the exhibition INDUSTRIOUS|Artefacts, the evolution of crafts, in which guest curators Rianne Makkink and Jurgen Bey (Studio Makkink & Bey), by means of current work of various designers, show how historical crafts in the former Zuiderzee region have evolved and how they influence contemporary design and industrial processes.

The exhibition runs up to 12 February 2012. In the previous century, the reclamation of land by closing off the Zuiderzee had an enormous impact on the local economy and culture. Old crafts were no longer what they had been. The work of the cooper, rope-maker, net-maker, tanner and coppersmith was supplemented with mechanical skills, but this did not mean that the craft vanished completely – it was transformed into something new: the fisherman took up new employment in a button factory or in the ceramics industry.

Picture 137 « INDUSTRIOUS | Artefacts. Studio Makkink & Bey and the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen present ‘Industrious|Artefacts’, the evolution of crafts. The exhibition opens May 27, 2011 through February 12, 2012. Industrious Artefacts, the evolution of crafts shows the development of industrial processes. Guest curators Jurgen Bey and Rianne Makkink make connections between production processes from past and present. To this end, they invited national and international designers / artists who are reinventing these industrial systems in various machines, installations and designs. The Afsluitdijk barrier dam that closed off the Zuiderzee sea in the last century, had a tremendous impact on local economy and culture and brought prosperity to the area.

Through the heritage of the past and the design machines of today, we’re showing a glimpse of future solutions. Students of the Applied Arts Department of the Sandberg Instituut will present their projects inside the five houses of the Open Air Museum. Studio Makkink & Bey P.O.
