The industrial revolution and the establishment of the first European settlement in Australia happened roughly at the same time. As steam power was first applied to the problems of pumping water from Northumberland mines, and waterpower to the looms and mills of Lancashire, the first loads of convicts were sent across the globe to what would become Sydney. Indeed, the voyage of the First Fleet between 1786 and 1788 itself was characterised by the rational use of scientific knowledge for practical purposes.
