This is not the demure individually-portioned dessert served in restaurants with white tablecloths. No, ma'am. According to my mother, my grandma would make this for the kids when a special treat was merited. This messy, sticky, cocoa-rich affair is more like a self-saucing brownie than anything else. And like all such things, it's best served warm and with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. In the copy of Favorite Recipes from First United Methodist Church of Stillwater, Minnesota that has been passed down to me, the recipe for "Chocolate Cake Pudding" by Shirley Nelson is circled in bold blue ink.
A few days ago Stella, the blogger at BraveTart, blew my mind. She said that you could make sprinkles easily in your own kitchen. Crazy, I thought — brilliant! I obviously had to try it. Here's how it turned out for me, documented step by step.
Do you use your freezer to preserve herbs, vegetables, or fruit? The freezer can be a powerful, overlooked method of preserving. I wrote an article for that appears this month in the July/August issue, all about preserving the good foods of summer by using the freezer. Pesto, peach puree, tomato soup — stash them away now for the winter! One of my favorite ingredients, a handful of fresh herbs from the garden, is one of the simplest things to preserve in the freezer, and I just learned a new, better way to freeze herbs: In oil! I noticed a post at The Gardener's Eden ( read it here ) recommending that you freeze some herbs in oil.
When the pan is hot, remove your finger from the bottom of the funnel and let the batter drizzel out - move the funnel in a circular motion to create nice big spirals. Using a finger to cover the bottom opening of a funnel, pour a generous 1/2 cup of batter into the funnel. Remove finger and release batter into hot oil moving funnel in a circular motion to form spiral. Fry until golden brown on each side. Drain on paper towels.
You know the old saying, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” ? Well, in my household, the way to Mr. CG’s heart is through a bowl of very hot homemade soup. The man likes his soup. Hot.
Every Sunday, my dad used to make a yummy homemade breakfast for all of us, and we’d gather in the kitchen for some nice family time. It was awesome, and man… that guy can make some breakfast! Sometimes it was waffles or french toast, but probably the most frequent (and my favorite) was chocolate chip pancakes (with lil’ smokies breakfast sausages…mmm). This isn’t his recipe, but it’s durned good. 1 digg digg First, dump 3 cups of flour into a bowl.
Every Thing Tastes Better On A Stick I made these last year for fun, and then made them for Thanksgiving and they were a hit. Would be good with any pie filling! Think I might try cherry this year.
If you’ve never tried it, you must. If you’ve always considered it the kind of dish only Thurston Howell the Third-types eat, think again. If you’re scared of it…you’ve got some serious issues. I kid! Eggs Benedict, folks.
Oooooh. You’re getting ready to get a taste of Me, Opinionated. Be sure to take a photo! You won’t see it very often.
Iced coffee is my life. When I wake up, often around the time party animals on the west coast are just heading home, I start each day not with a cup of freshly brewed hot java, but with a tall, blessed glass of creamy iced coffee in a glass. I’ve been an iced coffee freakazoid for years and years. To say I couldn’t live without it is an understatement.
These are incredible, lovely, and wonderful. And beautiful. And crisp, and textural, and creamy and dreamy.
For the second State Fair recipe, I whipped up some hot dogs and cheese-on-a-stick reminiscent not just of state fairs and carnivals…but also of shopping malls in the eighties: this is said to be the same batter recipe used by the famous Corn Dog 7 chain of stores, and if you don’t remember Corn Dog 7, you’re way too young and probably don’t have slack abdominal muscles or jowls yet. I feel very sorry for you! Corn Dog 7 had fabulous hot dogs, of course…but their Cheese-on-a-Stick was what I loved the most as I traipsed through the mall with my best friend Jenn, buying things like neon pink fingerless gloves and Soloflex posters and Duran Duran tapes. I miss the Eighties so much it hurts. I’m going to go text Jenn right now.
