Top 10 Schools of Philosophy. Miscellaneous Through history, various forms of philosophy have developed. Many have fallen by the wayside but a number have stuck. This is a list of the top 10 schools of philosophy. 10. Solipsism Nothing exists; Even if something exists, nothing can be known about it; Even if something could be known about it, knowledge about it can’t be communicated to others. - Gorgias (485-375 BC) Solipsism is the idea that one can only know that one’s self exists and that anything outside the mind, such as the external word, can not be known to exist.

:::::: carnovsky :::::: RGB Color est e pluribus unus RGB is a work about the exploration of the “surface’s deepness”. RGB designs create surfaces that mutate and interact with different chromatic stimulus. Carnovsky's RGB is an ongoing project that experiments with the interaction between printed and light colours. The resulting images are unexpected and disorienting. The colors mix up, the lines and shapes entwine becoming oneiric and not completely clear. Through a colored filter (a light or a transparent material) it is possible to see clearly the layers in which the image is composed. See the Wallpapers collections available: Pepi Runic pendants. Www.iowadnr.gov/InsideDNR/RegulatoryWater/WaterQualityStandards.aspx. When we consider the current status of water quality within the state of Iowa, we find that Iowa has generally good quality surface waters and groundwaters. However, threats to the quality of both surface waters and groundwater exist, and small portions of the state's waters have serious pollution problems. The goal of the Environmental Protection Division of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is to protect public health, safety, well being and quality of life by protecting the state's natural environment. Regarding water quality, the DNR seeks to ensure that all Iowans have surface waters that are fishable and swimmable to the fullest extent practicable, safe drinking water, groundwater that is free from harmful contamination, protection from the adverse effects of floods, and water resources that are put to their best beneficial uses.

The DNR manages water quality through the implementation of the state's Water Quality Standards. Drinking Water: Unreliable State Data Limit EPA's Ability to Target Enforcement Priorities and Communicate Water Systems' Performance. The nation's drinking water is among the safest in the world, but contamination has occurred, causing illnesses and even deaths. Under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has authorized most states, territories, and tribes to take primary responsibility for ensuring that community water systems provide safe water. EPA needs complete and accurate data on systems' compliance with SDWA to conduct oversight. GAO was asked to assess the (1) quality of the state data EPA uses to measure compliance with health and monitoring requirements of the act and the status of enforcement efforts, (2) ways in which data quality could affect EPA's management of the drinking water program, and (3) actions EPA and the states have been taking to improve data quality.

GAO analyzed EPA audits of state data done in 2007, 2008, and 2009, and surveyed EPA and state officials to obtain their views on factors that have affected data quality and steps that could improve it. BREAKING UPDATE 5:15PM- According to blockaders on the ground, several arrests have been made at the Tree Blockade. Monday I was arrested at the site of Tar Sands Blockade’s tree blockade in Winnsboro, TX. As part of the blockade’s regular ground team, I participate in support operations for those who spend their days and weeks high above the forest floor. Unfortunately, my efforts worked all too well, and in trying to draw a few police in my direction, I ended up drawing almost every police in the vicinity. That’s when a larger man, who I later heard claim to work for the Hays County Sheriff’s Department, threw me to my stomach. Dealing with Iowa’s Nutrient Runoff. Iowa Row Crops In May 2010, I first posted on Blog for Iowa about Iowa’s nutrient runoff and its effect on the Gulf of Mexico, where it creates hypoxia zones. It is a serious problem, grounded in reality, and Governor Branstad, along with a number of state agencies, is proposing a voluntary action plan to address nutrient flow from point and non-point sources into our rivers and streams, and ultimately into the Gulf of Mexico.

On Monday, the governor’s office released the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy for public comment. Find the press release here. As someone concerned with the quality of Iowa’s waterways and the well being of our oceans, I urge readers to take this initiative seriously. It is not a perfect plan and it may not be a viable plan. The concern about the Farm Bureau’s involvement is whether doing what is right should be a matter of law with obligatory compliance or of common sense and voluntary compliance. Here is the link to the Nutrient Reduction Strategy home page. Letter to reps bout FISA spying.

A piece of uncooked spaghetti rarely ever breaks in half. - Technology - Aug 27. With the aid of a high-speed camera, a pair of physicists in France actually figured this one out! For this they won an "Ig Nobel Prize", a parody award given to discoveries that "first make people laugh, and then make them think". They found that once a piece of spaghetti is bent beyond the breaking point, flexural waves that travel outward through the noodle from the site of the initial fracture.

These waves cause the remaining pieces to curve even more before they have had time to straighten themselves out, which leads to additional breaks. For those of you who want to sound smart, the technical term for the effects of snapping a piece of spaghetti is a 'cascading failure mechanism.' (Sources: 1, 2) Jackets | 599fashion.com. Paradox of tolerance. The tolerance paradox arises from a problem that a tolerant person might be antagonistic toward intolerance, hence intolerant of it.

The tolerant individual would then be by definition intolerant of intolerance. Discussions[edit] Michael Walzer asks "Should we tolerate the intolerant? ". He notes that most minority religious groups who are the beneficiaries of tolerance are themselves intolerant, at least in some respects. In a tolerant regime, such people may learn to tolerate, or at least to behave "as if they possessed this virtue".[1] Philosopher Karl Popper asserted, in The Open Society and Its Enemies Vol. 1, that we are warranted in refusing to tolerate intolerance.

Philosopher John Rawls concludes in A Theory of Justice that a just society must tolerate the intolerant, for otherwise, the society would then itself be intolerant, and thus unjust.
