Vanishing of the Bees is a 2009 documentary film by Hive Mentality Films & Hipfuel films, directed by George Langworthy and Maryam Henein and released in the United Kingdom on October 9. The story centers around the sudden disappearance of honey bees from beehives around the world, caused by the poorly understood phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder or CCD. Although the film does not draw any firm scientific conclusions as to the precise cause or causes of CCD, it does suggest a link between neonicotinoid pesticides and CCD. The UK cinema release of the film was supported by The Co-operative Group. Cast Reception References External links

Here, a honey collection in Homestead, Fla., last month. The winter of 2012-13 was another rough one for honeybees, threatening an industry that is integral to a large part of fruit and vegetable production in the U.S. A study released Tuesday by the U.S.
The impact of the premature deaths is significant for the honeybee industry and the broader agriculture industry. Overall, more than $20 billion of annual harvests rely on pollination, according to U.S. estimates, with the almond harvest alone valued at $4 billion a year. “We are one poor weather event or high winter bee loss away from a pollination disaster,” said Jeff Pettis, the U.S. Not doing well. 5 ways to help our disappearing bees. In the spring and summer, thoughts naturally turn to the birds and the bees. Except, the bee seems to be in trouble.
You've probably heard about colony collapse disorder (CCD) or vanishing bee syndrome, the mysterious and rather dramatic die-off of domesticated honeybees in Europe and North America. Scientists aren't really sure what's going on yet. All that's known for sure is our bee colonies are suddenly disappearing. Affected bees simply leave the hive and don't come back, making diagnosis of the problem even more difficult.
In some areas, losses of honeybees are reported to be as high as 75 percent. So what could be happening here? Few of us are research scientists capable of chipping in some lab time to help out, but there are some things we can all do to assist honeybee and natural bee populations close to home. Plant things that bees like Bees particularly like clover. Bees are all about pollen. The good news here is that bee-friendly plants are easy to grow. Provide bee habitat. The Great Honeybee Conspiracy. Health Wire Posted by Jimmy Mengel - Thursday, December 16th, 2010 The humble honey bee is getting its fair share of buzz this year — which doesn't bode particularly well for the species, or American agriculture as a whole.
The most recent revelations involve leaked government documents, regulatory malfeasance, and scientific censorship. To mix an insect metaphor, it's quite a tangled web... Since 2006, serious decimation of the North American bee population has taken place. Termed “colony collapse disorder,” millions of worker bees have mysteriously disappeared from their colonies, largely confounding the scientific community. Blame has volleyed from viruses to fungi to cell phone radiation... But a suspect has emerged as enemy number one: Bayer's pesticide clothianidin. Clothianidin is widely used on America's corn crops in addition to other ubiquitous crops like canola, soy, and sugar beets. Here's the EPA's timeline, courtesy of the Pesticide Action Network North America (PANNA) Be Well, Scientists discover what’s killing the bees. Universal Basic Income (UBI) proposals are gaining in popularity across the political spectrum.
The measures would see governments hand a set monthly income to every single citizen within a country, either in addition to existing benefits or in place of them (depending on the details of the particular UBI proposal). Left-wing fans favor UBI’s ability to eradicate absolute poverty, while right-wing libertarians are drawn to its simplicity and reduction in bureaucracy.
In Silicon Valley, startup investment firm Y Combinator has plans to fund a basic income experiment in the US, while Finland announced last year it would conduct its own extensive experiment. But how feasible is UBI to implement in reality? We spoke to five UBI experts to get their take on the practicalities of the scheme. Matthew Zwolinski, associate professor of philosophy at the University of San Diego: The main changes we need to see to introduce UBI are largely conditions of public acceptability. More evidence links pesticides to honeybee losses. Photo by Rebecca Reardon. It’s been three weeks since beekeepers filed a petition with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to remove clothianidin — the pesticide widely suspected to be wreaking havoc on honeybee populations — from the market. In that time three studies have been released that strengthen the link between bee die-offs and neonicotinoids (neonics), the chemical family of which clothianidin is a member.
Here’s what they found: Study No. 1: Bees exposed to pesticides are getting lost. French researchers found that honeybees exposed to the neonic pesticide thiamethoxam had trouble finding their way back to their hives — no small problem for a foraging species. Study No. 2: Bee colonies exposed to pesticides are smaller and the ratio of males to females is way off. Study No. 3: The more pesticides bees are exposed to, the faster they die. Bonus irony: High fructose corn syrup is bad for bees too. Let’s get this straight. Honey Bee Die-Off. A federal study attributes the massive die-off in American honey bee colonies to a combination of factors, including pesticides, poor diet, parasites and a lack of genetic diversity. Nearly a third of honey bee colonies in the United States have been wiped out since 2006. The estimated value of crops lost if bees were no longer able to pollinate fruits and vegetables is around $15 billion.
The report comes on the heels of an announcement Monday by the European Union that they are banning the use of pesticides that may be harmful to bees for two years. The measure is being closely watched here because the insecticides, known as neonicotinoids, have been in wide use for the past decade. Many studies, including the study released today by the USDA, have made a link between the insecticides — which are used to ward off pests such as aphids and beetles — and honeybee deaths.
In Europe, the decision to institute the moratorium was not without controversy. Researchers find alarming decline in bumblebees. Bees - Colony Collapse Disorder. Why bees are disappearing: Marla Spivak at TEDGlobal 2013. Photo: James Duncan Davidson Our supermarket produce aisles would look very, very bare without bees. As MacArthur Fellow Marla Spivak explains on the TEDGlobal stage, this is something we should all be extremely concerned about: the dramatic drop in bee populations that’s been taking place over the past seven years. (Read The New York Times’ take on the especially scary drop in just the last year.) In the United States alone, shares Spivak, while there were 4.5 million bess in 1945, thee are now about 2 million. “Bees are not out there pollinating our food intentionally — they’re out there because they need to eat,” says Spivak. “In the process, they provide this valuable pollination service.” There are 20,000 species of bees. Another popular bee is the honeybee, which Spivak calls the “charismatic representative” for the other bee species.
Bees have survived for over 50 million years. “This small bee is holding up a large mirror — how much is it going to take to contaminate humans?” Honey Bee Die-Off. Keep Bees, Naturally! If you’d like to benefit your garden and community and offer a treat to your taste buds, consider trying your hand at natural beekeeping in your own backyard. As honeybees gather pollen and nectar to make 50 pounds or more of pure, wild honey per hive, they pollinate crops nearby — and up to four miles away. This pollination is essential for good yields for some flowering crops. Best of all, honeybees require only simple management once the hives are up and running. Kim Flottum, editor of Bee Culture Magazine, says that keeping bees takes “more effort than for your cat, but less than your dog.” But can you achieve natural beekeeping? For the first time in 20 years, the answer is yes. Until the mid-1980s, some beekeepers avoided using chemicals inside beehives, but then a quarantine violation led to the importation of the varroa mite, a devastating tick-like honeybee parasite.
Getting Started If you live in the city, also check to make sure local regulations do not prohibit beekeeping. Effects of Colony Collapse Disorder Now Manifesting in California. Sacramento California is now witnessing first hand, the daunting implications of colony collapse disorder. It is estimated that California produces about 80 percent of the world’s almonds. There are 6,000 almond orchards in that region and many of the farmers are finding that there simply aren’t enough bees to pollinate their crop. A fourth generation beekeeper lost 70% of his hives while another lost 100%. The negative effects of the honeybee shortage were predicted last year so measures were taken to try and offset this dangerous scenario. 11,000 hives were brought to California from all over the country; of these 11,000 hives, hundreds were found dead upon arrival. There are an abundance of theorized causes of colony collapse disorder, from disease, to mites, to pesticides.
The effects of honeybee loss are near cataclysmic as it is estimated that one third of the entire world’s food supply comes from pollination. In late 2002, so-called "Bt corn" was approved for commercial use. -- Spiegel Magazine -- Dr. -- Diana Cox-Foster, C.C.D.
