*New Grads, Meet New Metrics: Why Early Career Librarians Should Care About Altmetrics & Research Impact

The ambiguity surrounding how to define and measure impact is arguably one of the biggest frustrations that new librarians face, especially if they are interested in producing scholarship outside of traditional publication models. To help address this problem, we seek to introduce early career librarians and other readers to altmetrics, a relatively new concept within the academic landscape that considers web-based methods of sharing and analyzing scholarly information. Altmetric Now Capturing Attention to Books Listed on Amazon – Altmetric. New data offers a more comprehensive view of online sharing and discussion for thousands of books Tuesday 5 September — London, UK — Data science company Altmetric today announced it has started tracking attention to books listed on Amazon, providing further insights into the online discussions and engagement relating to individual titles.

This new capability has already produced huge volumes of attention data – in just a few days Altmetric has found over 145,000 new mentions of 3,000 Amazon-listed books from Twitter, and over 20,000 mentions from other sources such as news, blogs and policy documents. Revisiting: Cooperstown, Ground Zero for Altmetrics. Author’s Note: Many years ago, my boss at the time remarked that if you want to point out a silly argument, all you have to do is to quote it verbatim.

She was both right and wrong, because the silly argument will be believed by those who believe it and mocked by those who don’t. I offer this preface to my 2014 blog post on baseball statistics and altmetrics for anyone who needs a flashing sign that says, “Satire! Intention to Tweet: Medical Study Reports Tweets Improve Citations. Tweeting by a network of journal social media editors increases citations and Altmetric scores, reports a new paper published in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery.

Intention to Tweet: Medical Study Reports Tweets Improve Citations

Not surprisingly, it is also getting a lot of tweets. The study is based on a randomized controlled trial, in which 112 original research papers were assigned to either the intervention arm (receiving tweets and retweets by members of the journals’ social media network delegates) or no intervention at all. The authors measured each paper’s citations and Altmetric scores after one year. Yet, a closer reading of this paper yields substantive questions and concerns about its veracity, including the source of citations, measured outcomes, and an inability to validate or recreate the dataset. Neither the authors, nor the editorial office, have been willing to explain or defend this paper. Given a lack of response from the authors and limited involvement from the journal’s editorial office, I attempted to recreate the authors’ dataset. Altmetrics expand our view of what impact looks like, but also of what’s making the impact.

Academic Libraries (Matt Enis) PLUMBING TECHNOLOGY New platforms from Plum Analytics (top) and Altmetric.com (below) help researchers and librarians aggregate and analyze altmetric data “Altmetrics: A manifesto,” published five years ago this month, described an academic publishing landscape in which the volume of literature was exploding, and the three traditional filters used to help researchers gauge the relative importance of individual papers in their fields—peer review, citation counting, and a journal’s average citations per article—were failing to keep up.

Altmetrics: how librarians can support researchers in improving their… Making Metrics Meaningful. Regular readers may know that I can get cranky at times about our passion for demonstrating value and productivity in quantitative ways that encourage publishing for the sake of publishing, leaving little time for reflection or pursuit of ideas that won’t quickly provide a line for the CV.

Making Metrics Meaningful

So I was a little skeptical when I sat down to read a new book, Meaningful Metrics: A 21st- Century Librarian’s Guide to Bibliometrics, Altmetrics, and Research Impact published by ACRL. Turns out it’s a thoughtful and thorough guide to new and old ways to see what kind of audience a publication gets and how not to abuse those measures.

While it’s addressed to librarians, it would be valuable to any scholar interested in these issues. The subjects covered – impact, bibliometrics, altmetrics, along with some special topics – each get a deep-dive explanation as well “in practice” chapters that explain how things work. Introduction to Altmetrics - Altmetrics: Measure Research Impact - LibGuides at Oregon State University. Alternative metrics, or Altmetrics, are measures of research impact that supplement citations. Altmetrics measure the wider and societal impacts of scholarly works by tracking how they are discussed, shared, saved, read, and reused by scholars and the public. Altmetrics also expose the contexts that underlie the numbers, so scholars can see not only how often their work is discussed online, but who and what others are saying about it.
