3D Printshow 2012. The Tesla Valve: One Way Flow With No Moving Parts. Here’s yet another delightful mechanical curiosity from among Nikola Tesla’s 278 known patents.

The Tesla Valve: One Way Flow With No Moving Parts

This one is #1,329,559 US, “Valvular Conduit,” issued 1920. You may have to stare at the upper section, for a moment, to figure out what’s going on: Flow from left to right, as illustrated, is against the valve’s bias—the stream is broken up and diverted in circular paths that return to interfere with each other. Flow from right to left, however, is not so impeded. These are images of a laser-sintered nylon Tesla valve by Shapeways user imperator, who is also, I believe, the narrator in this video from YouTuber LimitlessInd. It includes a brief demonstration of the conduit’s operation in both directions (using a stream of air from the narrator’s mouth), but I for one would love to see a demo using a visible fluid. Boston Thingiverse user Brendan Chenelle has posted a 3D model.

3D Printing Coming to Vending Machine Near You

Combining the hyper-local convenience of Redbox with cutting edge technology, Dreambox is a vending machine that aims to fuel the 3D-printing revolution from the bottom up. NEWS: 3-D Printed Skull Implant Ready for Operation Dreambox was created by co-founders David Pastewka, Ricard Berwick and Will Drevno, who all met in a mobile application development class and competition at the University of California, Berkeley.

Frustrated by their lack of accessible, on-campus 3D printing options and the two- to four-week lead time for online 3D printing services, the trio came up with the idea for a more ubiquitous option. “Having an item 3D printed with a Dreambox is as simple as uploading or choosing a design online, clicking the ‘Print’ button and retrieving the item once it’s ready,” the group states in their press kit. Users can also upload designs via a USB stick at the machine. Via Inhabitat. Video: Chris Anderson's talk at Wired 2011 - Watch online.
