An Overview of Cryptography. As an aside, the AES selection process managed by NIST was very public.

An Overview of Cryptography

A similar project, the New European Schemes for Signatures, Integrity and Encryption (NESSIE), was designed as an independent project meant to augment the work of NIST by putting out an open call for new cryptographic primitives. NESSIE ran from about 2000-2003. While several new algorithms were found during the NESSIE process, no new stream cipher survived cryptanalysis. As a result, the ECRYPT Stream Cipher Project (eSTREAM) was created, which has approved a number of new stream ciphers for both software and hardware implementation. Similar — but different — is the Japanese Government Cryptography Research and Evaluation Committees (CRYPTREC) efforts to evaluate algorithms submitted for government and industry applications. CAST-128/256: CAST-128, described in Request for Comments (RFC) 2144, is a DES-like substitution-permutation crypto algorithm, employing a 128-bit key operating on a 64-bit block.

The Right Way to Respond to Failure. My wife Eleanor and I were visiting some friends on a Saturday when their nine-year-old daughter, Dana*, came home.

The Right Way to Respond to Failure

She was close to tears, barely holding it together. “Oh sweetie,” her mom said. “What happened at the swim meet?” Dana is an excellent swimmer. She trains hard, arriving at swim practice by six most mornings and swimming some afternoons as well. If You're Too Busy to Meditate, Read This. This morning, like every morning, I sat cross-legged on a cushion on the floor, rested my hands on my knees, closed my eyes, and did nothing but breathe for 20 minutes.

If You're Too Busy to Meditate, Read This

People say the hardest part about meditating is finding the time to meditate. This makes sense: who these days has time to do nothing? Top Ten Myths About Evolution. 47 Mind-Blowing Psychological Facts You Should Know About Yourself

As in: 100 things you should know if you are going to design an effective and persuasive website, web application or software application. Or maybe just 100 things that everyone should know about humans! The order that I’ll present these 100 things is going to be pretty random. So the fact that this first one is first doesn’t mean that’s it’s the most important.. just that it came to mind first. Dr. I want sparks & I want them NOW!

Update May 2003 - Marx Three is now up & running Do you like the idea of tesla coils and other high-voltage sparking stuff, but don't have the time, money or patience to build something that elaborate?

I want sparks & I want them NOW!

Here's a fun little project that can make big, fat, noisy sparks at least 2 inches long, and can be built very quickly and cheaply. The Marx generator consists of an array of resistors, capacitors and spark gaps arranged as follows: The capacitors, C, are charged up in parallel via the 1M (one megohm) resistors, so they each become charged to the input voltage.

When first (leftmost) spark gaps breaks down (sparks), the voltage across the next increases, causing it to break down, and so on for all the other gaps. Rb has a ballasting effect. Component choice I based the component values on what I had available, and there is plenty of scope for experimentation here. An input voltage of about 4-8KV is recommended. Dream stabilization[edit] Once you are able to dream lucidly, you may find that it is difficult to stay in the dream; for example, you may wake instantly or the dream may start “fading” which is characterized by loss or degradation of any of the senses, especially vision.

Lucid Dreaming/Using

Alternatively, a new lucid dreamer could easily forget that they are in a dream, as a result of the shock of the sensation. Don't worry if you wake immediately after becoming lucid. As you gain more experience of becoming lucid, it will come as less of a shock and you’ll be less likely to wake up. Make sure you do a reality check to be sure you’re not still dreaming. You can avoid more gradual fadings by stimulating your senses. Ideally you should be able to use the techniques below to stabilize your dream before it starts to fade (or “black out”).
