The list of negative can easily be turned around once we set a system of love.

Animal agriculture, water consumption, pollution
Seemingly natural disasters, fires, floods, tornadoes, volcanoes,
Carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide,
Contamination of water and food
Sickness
Species extinction

We find ourselves all across the world finding a wide array of solutions.
As some people get sick we find temporary ways to make them feel better.
This system is faulty and found on all levels. Environmental Shittiness. A Montanan's Frustration with Hurricane Harvey. I want to first offer my condolences to all affected by Hurricane Harvey, in Houston and around the country and the world.

It has been a horrific tragedy in many ways, including the shock for those who have lost all their worldly possessions let alone those who have lost friends and family. And I encourage anyone and everyone who can afford to, to help with disaster relief through reliable resources. This article is in no way meant to minimize the tragedies and impact of Hurricane Harvey across the Southern United States. That all being said, I would like to explain why the national media coverage has been unnervingly frustrating for me. My beautiful home state, Montana, has been burning up for months with very little coverage or outrage of the lack of help we've gotten from our Federal Government. To put this in perspective, on August 29th, 2017 evacuation orders were given to more than 1,100 homes in the Seeley Lake area of Western Montana.

Smoke. So this is a hopeful call to action. Most millennials are hoping to retire early, but only a fraction are doing what it takes. 100,000 Pages of Chemical Industry Secrets Gathered Dust in an Oregon Barn for Decades — Until Now. For decades, some of the dirtiest, darkest secrets of the chemical industry have been kept in Carol Van Strum’s barn. Creaky, damp, and prowled by the occasional black bear, the listing, 80-year-old structure in rural Oregon housed more than 100,000 pages of documents obtained through legal discovery in lawsuits against Dow, Monsanto, the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S.

Forest Service, the Air Force, and pulp and paper companies, among others. As of today, those documents and others that have been collected by environmental activists will be publicly available through a project called the Poison Papers. Van Strum didn’t set out to be the repository for the people’s pushback against the chemical industry. She moved to a house in the Siuslaw National Forest in 1974 to live a simple life. What will the English language be like in 100 years?

One way of predicting the future is to look back at the past. The global role English plays today as a lingua franca – used as a means of communication by speakers of different languages – has parallels in the Latin of pre-modern Europe. Having been spread by the success of the Roman Empire, Classical Latin was kept alive as a standard written medium throughout Europe long after the fall of Rome. But the Vulgar Latin used in speech continued to change, forming new dialects, which in time gave rise to the modern Romance languages: French, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian and Italian.

Similar developments may be traced today in the use of English around the globe, especially in countries where it functions as a second language. New “interlanguages” are emerging, in which features of English are mingled with those of other native tongues and their pronunciations. So the future for English is one of multiple Englishes. What is being lost? Getting shorter.

Neo-Nazism - Wikipedia. Neo-Nazism consists of post-World War II social or political movements seeking to revive the ideology of Nazism.[1] The term neo-Nazism can also refer to the ideology of these movements.[2] Neo-Nazism borrows elements from Nazi doctrine, including ultranationalism, racism, ableism, xenophobia, homophobia, antiziganism, antisemitism, and initiating the Fourth Reich. Holocaust denial is a common feature, as is the incorporation of Nazi symbols and admiration of Adolf Hitler. Neo-Nazi activity is a global phenomenon, with organized representation in many countries, as well as international networks. In some European and Latin American countries, laws have been enacted that prohibit the expression of pro-Nazi, racist, anti-Semitic or homophobic views. Many Nazi-related symbols are banned in European countries in an effort to curtail neo-Nazism.[3] History[edit] Out of the ashes of the Reich, 1945–1950s[edit] "Universal National Socialism", 1950s–1970s[edit] Worldview[edit] Italy[edit] France[edit]

Celebration — There is no "Away" That's been my refrain time and again as I've learned about the far reaching effects of plastic. Had I known that plastics never really go away, that all the ziploc bags I used for my kids snacks, the balloons tied up with colorful curly ribbon that I bought to surprise them on their birthdays, the glitter paints, plastic paintbrushes and stickers, the ridiculous plastic do-dads and knick-knacks I bought to reward them or make them smile, well, had I known those (entirely unnecessary) plastics would long outlive us all... that pound for pound, microgram for microgram, every single piece of plastic I've ever had pass through my household is now a burden to the planet and it's oceans and the amazing creatures in it, for all of time as we know it.

Well I wouldn't have bought any of it in the first place! But I didn't know. But now I do. There needs to be a big time revolution in packaging and product design (and overall human awareness), and it needs to happen yesterday. What natural purpose does oil/petrolium in the ground serve for Earth? | Peak Prosperity. US Has Killed More Than 20 Million People in 37 “Victim Nations” Since World War II. First published in November 2015 After the catastrophic attacks of September 11 2001 monumental sorrow and a feeling of desperate and understandable anger began to permeate the American psyche. A few people at that time attempted to promote a balanced perspective by pointing out that the United States had also been responsible for causing those same feelings in people in other nations, but they produced hardly a ripple.

Although Americans understand in the abstract the wisdom of people around the world empathizing with the suffering of one another, such a reminder of wrongs committed by our nation got little hearing and was soon overshadowed by an accelerated “war on terrorism.” But we must continue our efforts to develop understanding and compassion in the world. Hopefully, this article will assist in doing that by addressing the question “How many September 11ths has the United States caused in other nations since WWII?”

In California, suffering from its worst drought in a millennium, a 50-acre brush fire swelled seventyfold in a matter of hours, jumping across the I-15 freeway during rush-hour traffic. With today's news that August broke global temperature records, it's useful to consider how much our world's climate has changed over the years. A fantastic new timeline created on the web comic xkcd does exactly this. xkcd is of course the long-running, much-adored ongoing creation of Randall Munroe, an artist, physicist, and former NASA roboticist. Since 2005, Munroe has used his web comic to illustrate all sorts of scientific and nerdy concepts in really hilarious and insightful ways, from graphs showing which sci-fi futures are still possible, to infographics showing how many model rockets you'd need to get to space, to the "Ballmer Peak" showing the productivity of drunken programming.

He even has an asteroid named after him. In today's xkcd comic, Munroe tackled human-caused climate change, illustrating how Earth's average temperature has changed in the last 22,000 years, since the last glaciation — when glaciers were as far south as New York. Study: One-tenth of Earth's wilderness lost since the 1990s. It’s a bleak revelation — a new study reveals that about a tenth of the Earth’s wilderness has been lost since the 1990s. Over the last 20 years, a total area half the size of the Amazon and twice the size of Alaska has been depleted. The researchers behind the study, published in the journal Current Biology, say they hope that the sobering revelation that rich natural habitats like the Amazon have been decimated in a relatively short amount of time will act as a wakeup call to global leaders to emphasize conservation efforts in their environmental protection policies.

When asked why these important, at-risk areas haven’t been better protected, study lead author James Watson points the finger at government leaders around the world. The study shows that, right now, only about 23 percent of the world’s land area remains wilderness. The majority of this wilderness is found in North Asia, North Africa, Australia, and North America (primarily in northern Canada) . © 2016 CBS Interactive Inc. Except, surprisingly, Antarctica. “That’s currently the only place in the world not covered by nation-state jurisdiction,” Susanne Tarkowski Tempelhof, the platform’s founder told me matter-of-factly, lighting up a cigarette.

I don’t particularly want to move to Antarctica. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, I applied for Bitnation citizenship. The whole process was disappointingly anti-climactic. I was hungry for some tangible proof of my citizenship. A few hours outside of Berlin, I visited Dirk von Heinrichshorst. Inside Schloss Heinrichshorst. Dressed in a purple shirt and vest, with a well-waxed handlebar moustache curving up to the corners of his eyes, von Heinrichshorst ushered me into a large room decorated like a steampunk reception hall. “I am against borders,” he told me. Teenagers in America are resorting to sex work because they cannot afford food, according to a study that suggests widespread hunger in the world’s wealthiest country. Focus groups in all 10 communities analysed by the Urban Institute, a Washington-based thinktank, described girls “selling their body” or “sex for money” as a strategy to make ends meet. Boys desperate for food were said to go to extremes such as shoplifting and selling drugs. The findings raise questions over the legacy of Bill Clinton’s landmark welfare-reform legislation 20 years ago as well as the spending priorities of Congress and the impact of slow wage growth. Evidence of teenage girls turning to “transactional dating” with older men is likely to cause particular alarm. The qualitative study, carried out in partnership with the food banks network Feeding America, created two focus groups – one male, one female – in each of 10 poor communities across the US.

Nurturing a child early in life may help him or her develop a larger hippocampus, the brain region important for learning, memory and stress responses, a new study shows. Previous animal research showed that early maternal support has a positive effect on a young rat's hippocampal growth, production of brain cells and ability to deal with stress. Studies in human children, on the other hand, found a connection between early social experiences and the volume of the amygdala, which helps regulate the processing and memory of emotional reactions. Numerous studies also have found that children raised in a nurturing environment typically do better in school and are more emotionally developed than their non-nurtured peers. Brain images have now revealed that a mother’s love physically affects the volume of her child’s hippocampus. In the study, children of nurturing mothers had hippocampal volumes 10 percent larger than children whose mothers were not as nurturing.

Kate Ramsayer/NASA hide caption toggle caption Kate Ramsayer/NASA Sea ice melts off the beach of Barrow, Alaska, where Operation IceBridge is based for its summer 2016 campaign. Kate Ramsayer/NASA When scientists tallied the temperature readings from around the world last month, this is what they discovered: "July, 2016 was the warmest month we have observed in our period of record that dates back to 1880," says Jake Crouch, a climate scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. And July wasn't a freak occurrence, he notes. The temperature record for July is an average for the planet, Crouch explains. "A temperature in Kuwait on July 22 reached 126.5 degrees Fahrenheit according to an observation taken by the United States Air Force," Crouch says.

Scientists at NOAA and NASA agree that climate change is only part of the reason for the extra heat.

Naperville residents claim retention pond is making them sick. NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WLS) -- Some homeowners in west suburban Naperville believe a spray at a nearby retention pond is making them sick by emitting a toxic mist. Ted Rachlitz said he started wearing a respirator to mow the lawn after he claims spray from the retention pond made him sick. He said the problem began last summer.

"It's been a year. I've had sinus issues, and my voice is hoarse," Rachlitz said. It took a while for Rachlitz to connect the dots until he had a conversation with his next door neighbors. "We're getting sprays. Because the retention pond is part of the next door subdivision, the homeowner's association was charged with taking water samples and sending them out for E. coli testing.

"We've seen the results and we've show that the results are reasonable for that type of retention pond," Naperville spokesperson Linda LaCloche said. But these residents reject the results and have resorted to taking their own samples for testing, which show a very different contaminant count. Mental Health.
