Hurwitz took an engineering degree in Johannesburg where he discovered the fine line between art and science. He has lived in England for many years, working in the online industry though he quietly levitated into the world of art inspired by a need to make ‘something real’. Hurwitz discovered that he could use science as an artistic paintbrush. Each of his sculptures is a study on the physics of how we perceive space and is the stroke of over 1 billion calculations and algorithms.

SHOWcabinet: Prosthetics exhibition. Fetishistic suits of armour, orthopaedic braces and wearable tusks all feature in an exhibition of prosthetics at the SHOWcabinet space in London (+ movie). Curated by Niamh White and Carrie Scott of fashion film website SHOWstudio, the exhibition opened on Thursday and contains pieces intended to enhance, protect or deform the body. The name of the showcase derives from the Ancient Greek word "prosthesis", which means "to add", but the collection also incorporates the modern understanding of prosthetics as replacement limbs. Above: Fragmented Figure by Úna Burke Designer Úna Burke created original pieces for the show made from leather straps joined with rivets, which encase limbs like a suit of armour. Above: RE.TREAT #4 by Úna Burke A black leather outfit is made up of one piece that covers the neck, arms and shoulders, and another that fits over the legs up to the waist, leaving the chest and abdomen exposed.

Portraits Of Extreme Plastic Surgery, Done In Classical Style (NSFW) There are two ways most people interpret A New Kind Of Beauty, a book of photographs by Phillip Toledano that documents proponents of extreme cosmetic surgery. First, there’s revulsion: “the expected ‘Holy shit! These people look crazy,’ which definitely isn’t the point of the work,” the British photographer tells Slate. “And then there are hopefully some people who understand the point I’m making about the direction we’re headed.” It’s also easy to feel a bit of both. For many, plastic surgery is a tool that can be used to reveal someone’s true identity. Still, the photographer is quick to point out that there’s a whole spectrum of reasons--good and bad--why people modify their bodies surgically. So are these photographs of early adopters? Head over to Slate for the whole story, or buy A New Kind Of Beauty here.
Madame Peripetie. Alexandra Bellissimo. Pierre Fudarylí. Pierre Fudaryli© – The Tale of Chaos And Nix And The Creation of Night Pierre Fudarylí nace en noviembre de 1984 en la ciudad de Cancún Quintana Roo, México. MORGAN HERRIN Boudica Boudica was queen of the British Iceni tribe, a Celtic tribe who led an uprising against the occupying forces of the Roman Empire. Morgan Herrin creates works that refer to classical sculpture, often a Heroine which has endured some hardship, whether that's death by arrows, or the simple aging, evolving beauty of a lost statuette. Herrin uses as his primary medium standardized dimensional lumber-planed wood (2x4's) or in this case, found, aged lumber from a 100 plus year old building in Richmond, Virginia. His lastest two works have a rougher, weathered appearance and the qualities of a grittier realism, aligning perfectly with his current subject matter. Herrin is an artist with an extensive background in wood crafting and carpentry that unites a deep understanding and appreciation of the properties and materiality of wood with a fascination for the human form.
Oetzi ADA GALLERY 228 W.Broad St. Home : Schoony. Ishibashi Yui website. Choi Xooang. (click images for detail) All at once delicate and nightmarish these painted polymer clay figures by Seoul-based artist Choi Xooang are nothing short of remarkable. Try as I might it’s hard to find a definitive, trustworthy article to source information from, and even the spelling of his name seems to change from site to site.
However it seems generally accepted that Xooang is attempting to draw attention to human rights abuses in Korea, and seeing these somewhat macabre, stunted figures unable to see or speak, it’s hard to dispute that. You can see much more of his work at Mu Um and Slash, though be warned it’s somewhat graphic (generally nudity). I admit the mushroom cloud sculpture is a bit of a one-off, but I saw it was just posted yesterday and couldn’t resist. Also, if you like this, you’ll most likely enjoy the work of Emil Alzamora.
