Here's where I went a little off-course. It didn't really inspire confidence, nor did it look quite the way I'd envisioned even after a second coat. It just so happened I was also using one-step gold leaf paint for another project at the same time, on the same table. The gold leaf paint went on faster, and I only needed one coat.
