Macmillan fundraisers told to leave city shop

On the morning of Saturday, October 1, Rachel Eyres-Smith, who recently lost her husband to cancer, and two friends set up a fundraising stall for Macmillan in the entrance to Tesco in Kingston. She said this was arranged eight weeks before with a customer service manager, and said they talked to two customer service team leaders the day before. But six hours after arriving, having already raised £500, she said the manager approached the group and told them the position in the store wasn’t convenient. When they told him they had arranged to be there, he allegedly then said they weren’t appropriately dressed, as they were wearing shorts and T-shirts, and said he thought it was time they left. She said: “We were completely stunned, we didn’t know what to say.

Dark Side of Oz [Setup] [Similarities with Pictures] [Similarities] [Conclusion] [Pink Floyd Lyrics] I've done this experiment quite a few times, and I'll have to admit that there are a lot of coincidental events and themes. Although Pink Floyd has never admitted to doing such a thing (except Roger, who stays quiet when asked), there are just a few points that should be examined. I guess you'll just have to come to your own conclusion. It's just the way it is with this band.

UK has enough sheep shearers, needs more coders

The agency has drawn up a new list of occupations (PDF) that have a shortage of Brits to fill available positions. Officials have scratched 40,000 jobs from the previous listing, bringing the new total to 190,000. The previous list, which was effective from March and stretches to November this year, showed that the UK needed specialist workers, such as sheep shearers and skilled meat boners and trimmers for butchering, as well as – slightly more prosaic – secondary school science teachers and veterinary surgeons. The Independent Migration Advisory Committee is the body that makes the recommendations of which jobs to include on the list, which comes under Tier 2 immigration.

Kepler 22-b: Earth-like planet confirmed. 5 December 2011Last updated at 17:50 The planet, shown here in an artist's conception, circles its host star in 290 days Astronomers have confirmed the existence of a nearly Earth-sized planet in the "habitable zone" around a star not unlike our own.

Kepler 22-b: Earth-like planet confirmed

The planet, Kepler 22-b, lies about 600 light-years away and is about 2.4 times the size of Earth, and models suggest it has a temperature of about 22C. It is the closest confirmed planet yet to one like ours - an "Earth 2.0". However, the team does not yet know if Kepler 22-b is made mostly of rock, gas or liquid. During the conference at which the result was announced, the Kepler team also said that it had spotted some 1,094 new candidate planets - nearly doubling the telescope's haul of potential far-flung worlds. Kepler 22-b was one of 54 exoplanet candidates in habitable zones reported by the Kepler team in February, and is just the first to be formally confirmed using other telescopes.
