The Weirdest Interactive Installations and Performances. Hovering balls – kinetic sculpture. Designer and creative artist Joachim Sauter made a truly inspiring and amazing artwork for the BMW museum. The artwork consists of 714 metal spheres the can move vertically through small steel wires that are controlled by motors. By adjusting the spheres creative artwork is visualized and Joachim Sauter wanted to display the process of form finding. The animation is seven minutes long starting chaotically and then evolving into finished projects. The artwork can be visited at the BMW museum in Munich.

Conceived by French art and design studio Groupe LAPS, the dynamic creation was originally unveiled at the Fête des Lumieres 2011, although since then the display has traveled around the world. Made from low-energy LED light tubes, the troop of stick figures flashes on and off in time to original music composed especially for the installation. Groupe Laps‘ luminous stick figures are made from LED strips and white Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and the articulated joints are made of stainless steel. The UK-based lighting designer conceived of the installation years ago while driving across Stuart Highway on a road trip through Australia. Every night he would stop to rest at roadside campsite, where green grass and surreal sculptures struck a stark contrast to the surrounding red desert. Munro was fascinated by these oases, and how dormant desert seeds would burst into beautiful flowers when it rained.

The idea stuck with Munro for years until he finally brought it to life in a brilliant installation at the Eden Project in Cornwall.
